Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid patient care technician national certification or state-specific certification recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is required.
  • All applicable state licensure, education, and training requirements must be met.
  • Employees must successfully complete the organization’s dialysis training program.
  • Employees must successfully complete CPR certification.
  • Employees must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodation considered if needed.
  • The position requires the ability to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, pushing and pulling equipment, and lifting solutions up to 40 pounds.
  • The position requires travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community, with possible travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with policies, procedures, training, and applicable regulations.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines.
  • Assist with patient education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, and vascular access.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their previous treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain and document pre-treatment and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed blood flow and dialysate flow orders.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide prescribed interventions, and monitor patient responses to dialysis therapy.
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures, obtain hemostasis, apply appropriate dressings, and evaluate patients before discharge.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled, including Narrow Venous Limits.
  • Record treatment parameters and patient information accurately and promptly on hemodialysis treatment sheets and progress notes when applicable.
  • Report significant patient information, changes in condition, unusual findings, and vascular access concerns to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare, label, store, and route specimens according to laboratory requirements.
  • Clean blood spills with appropriate disinfectants according to facility policy.
  • Prepare, organize, and use supplies and equipment efficiently to prevent waste.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision and assist them as applicable.
  • Participate in recruitment of new clinical staff.
  • Assist with clinical orientation and ongoing training of direct patient care personnel and facility staff.
  • Function as a preceptor for direct patient care training in accordance with state guidelines and organizational training standards.
  • Deliver and maintain competency evaluations and audits for other patient care technicians.
  • Collaborate with clinical managers and education coordinators on quality standards, regulatory requirements, legal requirements, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Train applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under nurse supervision.
  • Provide developmental support to applicable clinical and facility staff.
  • Educate appropriate personnel about facility water-system integrity and safety and environmental integrity under the direction of registered nurses and interdisciplinary team staff.
  • Coordinate training programs and organizational development initiatives with clinical managers and education coordinators.
  • Monitor patient-care delivery processes through continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics by keeping work areas safe and clean.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Prepare dialysis treatments, perform required pretreatment machine alarm testing, and document the work.
  • Initiate the Solution Delivery System.
  • Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and promptly.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure required nursing signatures and corrections are completed.
  • Prepare initial patient charts and compile paperwork for placement in patient records.
  • Prepare and print laboratory requisitions for prescribed or stat specimens.
  • Participate in quality assurance and infection-control audits.
  • Monitor and reinforce staff and patient adherence to infection-control policies and procedures under the direction of the clinical manager or designee.
  • Participate in infection-control education and survey-response activities.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education and care information for new patients as permitted by state law.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to support the patient experience and ensure disciplines are scheduled according to the care plan.
  • Help patients understand home dialysis products, home dialysis benefits, and home dialysis options.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit.
  • Help patients understand treatment options, including demonstrating peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Assist with transition to the patient’s chosen dialysis modality.
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit.

  • At least five years of patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility is preferred.
