Dumont will officially succeed Eric Béranger on Nov. 1, following a transition period that begins in October, the company said Wednesday. Who is Jean-Brice Dumont? Before joining MBDA, Dumont spent 14 years in executive leadership roles at Airbus, most recently serving as executive vice president of both military air systems and air power at Airbus Defence and Space. Earlier in his career, Dumont worked at NHIndustries, Eurocopter and DGA. Dumont brings extensive experience working on international aerospace and defense programs, including the Tiger, NH90 and H160/HIL helicopters, and Airbus commercial aircraft programs such as the A321XLR and A350F. He also oversaw efforts involving the A400M, Eurofighter, A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport and C295 while supporting industrial production growth and next-generation programs spanning drones, transport, combat and mission systems. How has MBDA grown under Béranger? MBDA said its business expanded significantly under Béranger's leadership. Since 2019, annual revenue has grown from about $3.5 billion to nearly $7 billion, while its workforce has increased from 12,000 to 22,000 employees. Its order backlog also rose from approximately $21 billion to $51.5 billion. The company added that production doubled between 2023 and 2025 as it expanded manufacturing capacity, shortened production cycles and invested in its industrial base. MBDA also said it broadened its portfolio to provide European armed forces and allied nations with defense capabilities designed to address current and future threats. Dumont takes over MBDA as the company continues to expand its role in European defense modernization. Bundeswehr commissions MBDA and Rheinmetall to develop laser weapon for the German Navy. The German Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) has commissioned MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall to develop a High Energy Laster Weapon (HELW) system for the German Navy. The two companies are establishing a joint venture company for this purpose, according to a media release by MBDA. The HELW will be operational in 2029. The exact value of the development contract is undisclosed, but is said by MBDA to be worth hundreds of millions of euros. It covers the development of a complete system for maritime applications and will encompass the entire chain of operations, from reconnaissance and target tracking to engagement. "The laser weapon system from MBDA and Rheinmetall is a flagship technological project with a very high level of technological maturity," says Thomas Gottschild, managing director of MBDA Deutschland and MBDA's executive vice president for strategy and future growth. "It meets the specific requirements of the Bundeswehr and will significantly strengthen the German Navy's defence capabilities against air, sea and land targets. The containerised laser effector will also be cost-effective for port security as well as other applications." The project is based on the integrated system demonstrator, which underwent a full year of testing at sea by the German Navy. In March 2026 it repeatedly demonstrated its capabilities to high-ranking German delegations at the Wehrtechnischen Dienststelle für Waffen und Munition (WTD91) in Meppen. The demonstrator has already covered 28,000 nautical miles across the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean on board the frigate Sachsen, proving its effectiveness even in adverse environmental conditions. The prototype system has fired over 1,000 successful shots at air, sea and land targets, says MBDA. The advanced beam quality and tracking capability enable the laser power to be focused with extreme precision, even on moving targets. The system developed by MBDA and Rheinmetall can focus the power onto an area measuring just a few centimetres. Thanks to its very high energy density,. targets can be engaged more quickly, more precisely and more effectively, whilst using lower laser power. MBDA is a multi-national European group owned by Airbus (37.5%), BAE Systems (37.5%) and Leonardo (25%), and a global leader in complex weapon systems. In its development work for the HELW, the joint venture is placing particular emphasis on German supply chains and domestic systems expertise in order to safeguard national sovereignty in this key technology. Several European navies are working on laser weapons, with the United Kingdom's Royal Navy planning to fit the DragonFire directed-energy weapon on a destroyer by 2027, in work led by MBDA in partnership with Leonardo and QinetiQ. Naval vessels are particularly suited to deploy powerful lasers, as they can provide the physical space, electrical power, sensors and cooling required. "The laser weapon system will provide our personnel deployed on naval vessels with a significantly higher level of protection, particularly when it comes to countering drones," Roman Koehne, head of Rheinmetall's weapons and ammunition division, said in a statement. Railguns use electromagnetic acceleration rather than chemical propellants to fire a projectile, and could provide a possible counter to hypersonic threats. Meanwhile, Belgium said it will buy 20 of Rheinmetall's Skyranger 30 anti-drone cannons as well as 14 Thales GM200 radars, in addition to a previously announced plan to buy 10 NASAMS air-defense systems from Kongsberg. MBDA, Europe's largest missile maker, plans to double production of its Aster air-defence missile in 2026, CEO Éric Béranger announced. The company will increase overall missile output by 40% this year and double its five-year investment plan to support the expansion. The production surge follows heightened European demand for air defences after conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East exposed capability gaps. MBDA's Aster missiles are used in the SAMP/T system, Europe's only alternative to the American Patriot system. MBDA reported €13.2 billion in order intake for 2025, with its order backlog reaching a record €44.4 billion. Sales rose to €5.8 billion from €4.9 billion. Europe accounted for 70% of orders, reflecting the region's rearmament efforts. The company, owned by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo, had already doubled missile production between 2023 and 2025.
