Requirements
  • Ten years of life underwriting experience.
  • Five years of leadership experience in a formal or informal capacity.
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is preferred.
  • Validated technical underwriting ability to receive, evaluate, and underwrite on a medical or non-medical basis.
  • Extensive knowledge of life underwriting principles and practices, including basic contract law.
  • In-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical and non-medical risks related to life insurance.
  • Ability to interpret attending physicians’ reports, medical examinations, and medical test results.
  • In-depth understanding of financial underwriting as it pertains to life insurance.
  • Knowledge of processing and information systems supporting underwriting and new business submission.
  • Knowledge of underwriting design and project management.
  • Knowledge of handling and interpreting underwriting results.
  • Effective team leadership and management skills.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to present externally.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the day-to-day operations for the Life Underwriting team within the Life New Business organization.
  • Lead a team responsible for approving, modifying, or declining applications through underwriting assessments of medical history, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest, and other relevant information.
  • Provide oversight to team roles and responsibilities while creating an engaged culture and maintaining internal and external relationships.
  • Establish practices for quality, production standards, relationship management, customer requests, and schedules that adhere to compliance guidelines.
  • Participate in, sponsor, or own major projects and lead activities and staff while providing guidance to supporting departments.
  • Hire qualified underwriters and drive coaching, feedback, talent development, succession planning, and performance management.
  • Own service relationships requiring a high level of technical expertise and build relationships through presentations, intermediaries, or direct contact.
  • Partner with Sales to ensure satisfaction and develop staff to deepen relationships and create additional sales opportunities.
  • Supervise activities to ensure timely client service and quality standards; resolve service issues involving Sales, firms, producers, customers, and internal or external partners.
  • Implement state and federal regulations for products and procedures and ensure Operations is prepared for audits, regulatory changes, and legislative changes.
  • Lead continuous-improvement activities based on audit recommendations and calibration sessions.
  • Identify process, procedure, and technology improvements aligned with consistency and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage expenses within the established budget and make staffing, requirements-management, third-party-service, and contractor decisions to reduce operating expenses.
  • Participate in the annual budget process to ensure adequate staffing and funding.
  • Receive customer concerns and renegotiate underwriting decisions; mentor and develop underwriters.
  • Exercise authority for life underwriting cases up to $10,000,000, morbidity underwriting sign-off up to $1,000,000, and exceptions on Intelligent Underwriting.
  • Manage 10 to 12 underwriters.
  • Travel as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • EKG certification.
  • FLMI and FALU certifications.
  • Participation in or attainment of professional or technical studies or designations such as Chartered Life Underwriter and Fellow of the Life Management Institute.
  • AALU designation.
