Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing is required.
  • A current California registered nurse license is required.
  • A current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention verification is required within the first three months of hire.
  • The role requires the ability to communicate empathetically, respectfully, and effectively with mentally ill patients and their families.

  • The role requires knowledge of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, International Classification of Diseases, and basic medical and psychiatric terminology.

Responsibilities
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients and their families.
  • Provide medication administration, skin and wound care, activities of daily living support, and other essential patient care.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and modify nursing care plans, and prepare required records and reports.
  • Gather and assess patient information to meet nursing needs; assist and consult with physicians during procedures and diagnostic tests; and contact physicians or other departments to obtain or provide patient information.
  • Organize and supervise care, adjust assignments, and accept responsibility for the quality of patient care provided by co-workers during a work period.
  • Promote a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and families and control the environment for infection control.
  • Participate in implementing patient care and infection control standards, quality assurance activities, studies, and unit or other meetings.
  • Provide and evaluate patient care according to established standards and the nursing care plan.
  • Monitor patients for significant or critical changes, initiate procedures as required, and document care according to standards and required intervals.
  • Interpret and explain procedures, regimens, and services to patients and families, and teach health care and disease prevention techniques.
  • Use evidence-based best practices by conducting hourly rounding on assigned patients.
  • Conduct bedside shift reports with the patient involved to the best of the nurse’s ability.
  • Participate in every shift huddle to communicate red flags and ensure efficient patient handoff.
  • Clean and organize workstations and follow department safety protocols.
  • Use AIDET—Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, and Thank You—in patient and family interactions when appropriate.
  • Actively engage in department and hospital improvement projects.
  • Provide education and training to other team members as necessary.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is preferred.
  • Training and experience in psychiatric nursing or dementia care is preferred.
