Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Two to three years of experience in medical billing, coding, or charge entry is required.
  • Working knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revisions (ICD-9 and ICD-10) is required.
  • Experience with computerized billing systems, computer peripheral equipment, fax machines, personal computers, photocopiers, scanners, and laws governing charging and collection efforts is required.
  • Knowledge of compliance, cost reimbursement, and insurance negotiating procedures is required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, recognize and evaluate problems, solve problems, and correct errors is required.
  • Ability to deal courteously with patients and the public is required.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with medical and office staff, insurance organizations, and the public is required.
  • Verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, prioritize projects, and work independently with attention to detail is required.
  • Professionalism, customer service, interpersonal skills, and strict confidentiality are required.
  • Fire Life Safety Training for Los Angeles City is required; if the applicant does not have a card upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative support to the Consolidated Billing Office, including support, data entry, research, and assigned projects.
  • Work as a member of the billing team to maintain smooth operational flow and effective processes.
  • Sort and separate related documents accurately according to billing needs and client or payor guidelines.
  • Collect and audit patient charge slips and reports, and obtain missing charge slips, patient demographics, and insurance information.
  • Assign Current Procedural Terminology and International Classification of Diseases codes to medical services and diagnoses, enter charge data into the billing system, and verify data accuracy.
  • Mail insurance claims and patient statements and prepare attachments such as Explanation of Benefits copies for secondary billing.
  • Generate routine computer reports and printouts.
  • Review and correct minor claim errors identified in the front-end claim editor and make charge corrections requested by coders and collectors.
  • Maintain files for charge slips, Explanations of Benefits, and client or patient information, and prepare and distribute reports.
  • Verify insurance eligibility for assigned clinics and register patients in the data system as necessary.
  • Assist the department with insurance-related projects for revenue collections.
  • Review missing charges identified in the data system and contact departments or providers to obtain information needed to clear them.
  • Review Explanations of Benefits from third-party payors to determine whether payments were made correctly and whether denials can be rebilled.
  • Prepare and reconcile payment batches, correct errors, input payment data into the billing system, and monitor reports for accuracy.
  • Process cash, check, and credit-card payments; enter payment data into the billing system; and adjust financial class to process invoice balances.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to billing staff in resolving payment-related issues and notify the supervisor of ongoing problems.
  • Prepare deposits, maintain related documentation files, and prepare and distribute batch reports.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Desired Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMO, PPO, commercial, and private-pay billing is preferred.
