Requirements
  • Understanding of medical terminology, infection control techniques, and age-related acuity levels.
  • Previous experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant.
  • Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification by the time of hire.
  • Ability to perform all but the most specialized tests and patient workups needed for medical staff to diagnose problems.
  • Ability to evaluate and document the patient or family's response to care.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and work at a pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the health system.
  • Must demonstrate appropriate customer service skills.
  • Must be competent in collecting and interpreting patient-status data to identify age-specific needs.
  • Must provide proof of legal authorization to work in the United States.
Responsibilities
  • Perform preliminary ophthalmic examinations, including recording patient history, testing visual acuity and intraocular pressure, neutralizing current lenses with a lensometer, performing automated and simple manifest refractions, and screening color tests.
  • Perform physician-ordered special tests, including keratometer readings, visual fields, GDX, topography, and axial-length measurements.
  • Assist with patient and pharmacy telephone calls and prescription refills.
  • Set up, assist with, and clean up after minor surgical procedures.
  • Clean, operate, and maintain ophthalmic equipment.
  • Educate patients and provide post-treatment care instructions.
  • Retrieve laboratory and radiology reports using a computer.
Desired Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of Title 22 and Joint Commission standards.
  • Surgical Technician certification.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
  • Ability to instruct others in equipment use and procedure performance.
