Requirements
- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
- One to three months of experience in simple assembly is required.
- Experience in a metals manufacturing environment is a plus.
- Problem-solving skills are required to deal with issues involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- The ability to use basic high school math is required.
- The ability to read and interpret a tape measure is required.
- The ability to read a machining scale is a plus.
- The ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos is required.
- The ability to write simple correspondence and fill out daily labor and testing reports is required.
- The ability to stand and walk on the production floor for eight or more hours per day is required.
- The ability to walk up steps and stand on top of a low platform is required.
- The ability to use hands and fingers to grasp parts, change tooling, push and pull tools, and read and record pressure gauge results is required.
- The ability to walk, bend, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, or crouch frequently is required.
- The ability to lift and carry 30 to 60 pounds occasionally is required.
Responsibilities
- Safely pressure- and/or leak-test grey iron, ductile iron, steel, and stainless-steel castings while following work instructions.
- Maintain the highest level of quality and report results accurately.
- Assemble parts for loading on the testing bench.
- Visually examine parts for defects such as cracks and pinholes.
- Measure pressure-test results and log the data.
- Separate and mark defective parts according to job specifications and department procedures.
- File and deburr surplus metal from parts as needed.
- Accurately stamp parts after successful completion of testing.
- Disassemble parts after testing is complete.
- Tag and move parts to the staging area for storage.
- Prepare proper work-order and routing documentation.
- Test boilers, tanks, fittings, pipes, and similar objects for leaks using compressed air or water pressure.
- Install fittings to seal outlets and connect objects to high-pressure air or water lines using hand tools.
- Activate an air compressor or water pump until the gauge registers the specified internal pressure.
- Observe gauges for pressure loss and examine objects for escaping air or water to detect leaks.
- Mark objects at the source of leaks for subsequent repair.
- Apply soap solution to surfaces or immerse objects to facilitate locating air leaks when needed.
- Test objects under high pressure to ensure compliance with product safety ratings when needed.
