Character.AI files for bankruptcy as Disney bids $20M for its assets

Character.AI, the chatbot startup once valued at $1 billion, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. It seeks a court-supervised sale of its assets and will shut down if no buyer keeps the service running. Disney Worldwide Services has signed on as the lead bidder, offering $20 million for non-exclusive perpetual licences to certain intellectual property and some legal claims, plus transitional services from former employees. Other bidders can still top the offer. The sale is expected to close in late November or early December. The company cited legal and regulatory pressure, monthly operating losses of $8 million to $9 million, and trouble raising capital. It estimated its assets and liabilities at $50 million to $100 million. The app remains online.

Darth Vader's lightsaber from 'The Empire Strikes Back' expected to fetch at least $1 million at auction.

Darth Vader's lightsaber from 'The Empire Strikes Back' expected to fetch at least $1 million at auction. Darth Vader's lightsaber from his Cloud City duel with Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is heading to auction, with an expected sale price of at least $1 million. Darth Vader's lightsaber coming to auction. The prop is a highlight of Heritage Auctions' Ultimate Star Wars Auction on November 12, 2026. According to Heritage Auctions, the saber was used during the climactic confrontation in Episode V in which Vader reveals that he is Luke's father. It also appeared in Return of the Jedi. The hilt's predicted value stems from its documented screen use and, of course, its connection to a pivotal moment in Star Wars history. Heritage identifies it as a "screen-matched" prop, meaning its distinctive physical details can be matched to the lightsaber seen in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Its use in the Cloud City duel gives collectors a direct connection to Vader's revelation that he is Luke's father. There is also a substantial sales precedent: this same hilt last sold for $3,654,000 at Propstore in 2025. More than two dozen lightsaber props are included in the Ultimate Star Wars Auction. Among them are Anakin Skywalker's sabers from Revenge of the Sith, expected to sell for at least $10,000; Boba Fett's EE-3 carbine blaster from The Empire Strikes Back; a Yoda puppet hand used by Frank Oz; and Anthony Daniels' signed personal third-draft screenplay for the original Star Wars. For any inquiring minds with pocket change to spare, you can check out the full catalog for yourself on Heritage Auctions' website. Heritage also partnered with Disney for the Disney Experiences Auction at D23, which featured Muppet*Vision 3D statues, converted Big Thunder Mountain Railroad train benches, and other park memorabilia. If you're in the market for a more budget-friendly lightsaber solution, you can check out the new Protection & Defense components that recently arrived at Savi's Workshop in Disney's Hollywood Studios. Of the many props used throughout all Star Wars films to date, which one would you most like to own? Let us know on social media!

Disney pitches Paramount, Universal on Imax's big-screen rival.

Disney pitches Paramount, Universal on Imax's big-screen rival. About 5,500 screens globally - about three times the number of Imax venues - meet the standards for Infinity Vision Bloomberg News Thomas Buckley Published Oct 08, 2026 Walt Disney Co. has held talks with other studios about using its new brand for large-screen movie formats, often described as a competitor to Imax Corp., to market their films, according to people familiar with the matter. Disney has met with Skydance Corp.'s Paramount Pictures, Comcast Corp.'s Universal Pictures, Lionsgate Studios Corp. and Sony Pictures Entertainment to discuss Infinity Vision - a certification that unites hundreds of existing theater chains' large-screen formats like AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc.'s XL and Cinemark Holdings Inc.'s XD under one brand - said the people, who asked to not be identified because the discussions were private. Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The studios Disney has spoken with so far have shown early interest in the initiative, the people said. Some are waiting to assess the impact of Infinity Vision's marketing on Disney's Avengers: Doomsday, which opens the weekend of Dec. 18. The inclusion of the presentation standard in the marketing for blockbuster movies from Hollywood's major studios would lend credibility to the nascent brand. In April, Disney partnered with movie theatre chains to debut Infinity Vision, which required auditoriums to meet standards including a screen width of around 50-feet, laser projection, and the 7.1 surround-sound system from Dolby Laboratories Inc., Bloomberg reported at the time. About 5,500 screens globally - about three times the number of Imax venues - meet the standards for Infinity Vision. Disney's ambition to grow the label is in part the result of the company's superhero film Avengers: Doomsday not having exclusive access to Imax's screens. Imax has an agreement in place to screen Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three from Skydance's Warner Bros. film studio, which opens the same weekend. Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The development of Infinity Vision speaks to the strength of Imax, which has become an increasingly crucial component in the making and marketing of Hollywood blockbusters. The company, founded in 1967, works directly with filmmakers and proprietary cameras to capture exceptional detail suitable for large screens. Imax also licenses its technology to cinema chains, and offers round-the-clock quality monitoring and support. Studios regularly set release dates based on how many Imax screens are available to show their films. This advertisement has not loaded yet. Disney+ to stream upcoming Super Bowl.

Disney+ to stream upcoming Super Bowl. 8 hours ago 54 Disney announced Wednesday that its streaming service Disney+ will air the upcoming Super Bowl in February. The 2027 championship game, as well as two Monday Night Football games leading up to the Super Bowl, will be available to all Disney+ subscribers in the U.S. Disney had previously announced that its ESPN sports division would produce the Super Bowl in 2027 for the first time ever. The game will air on ESPN and Disney's broadcast network, ABC. Interest in the upcoming Super Bowl is already high. Disney said on its most recent earnings call that ad spots for the game are already sold out, the earliest sellout in Super Bowl history, according to a press release. The announcement is the latest move in Disney's efforts to expand its live sports streaming offerings. The media company last year launched a standalone ESPN streaming service, bringing the content outside the cable bundle. In August, Disney announced that Formula E - the open-wheel racing championship for electric cars - will be available to Disney+ subscribers beginning Dec. 18. Other streamers are also using live sports to bolster their portfolios. CNBC reported last week that Alphabet's YouTube is actively searching for additional live sports rights. YouTube already pays roughly $2 billion annually for the rights to "NFL Sunday Ticket," which will last until the end of the 2029-30 season. Netflix will air five NFL games during the 2026-27 season. Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said in a CNBC interview last month that the company would be open to acquiring the rights to international NFL games if they become available.
