Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an institution in the state of Texas is required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one admissions and financial-aid advice to students and families seeking assistance, and encourage students to consider a broad range of appropriate college choices.
  • Develop a comprehensive college timeline for each student, including admissions and financial-aid application deadlines.
  • Help students complete and submit admissions, scholarship, and financial-aid applications, and assist them in interpreting correspondence from colleges, including admission and financial-aid offers.
  • Travel to various high schools and other locations to perform advising and program work.
  • Organize group events that encourage students and families to consider, plan for, and apply to colleges and universities.
  • Visit classrooms, assemblies, and club meetings to offer Advise TX services and emphasize the importance of college.
  • Visit feeder middle schools to encourage early college planning.
  • Work with local community groups and social-service providers to offer group events outside the school setting and community service hours.
  • Assist other Advise TX advisers within the service area and support assessment and long-term program sustainability.
  • Visit other high schools in the assigned service area during school days.
  • Help organize, support, and attend evening and weekend events organized by other advisers.
  • Assist the program manager and evaluation staff in identifying, collecting, and interpreting progress and outcome variables to evaluate the Advise TX program.
  • Submit monthly progress reports to the program manager documenting progress and outcome data.
  • Meet, as appropriate, with evaluators from the National Office or Texas A&M.
  • Represent Advise TX, as requested by the program manager, to potential supporters and other interested parties.
  • Establish productive working relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers at the assigned high school.
  • Assess, in consultation with the Advise TX program manager and school personnel, each school's needs and adapt programs and activities to meet those needs.
  • Seek the advice and counsel of the on-site supervisor at each partner high school.
  • Maintain expertise in admissions and financial-aid advising.
  • In consultation with the program manager, seek and participate in professional-development opportunities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working with high school students.
  • Experience working with admissions and/or financial aid.
  • A background in general office conditions with significant time spent working with high school students.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.
