Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Successful completion of an accredited medical assistant program, certification as a CMA, CCMA, or RMA, or eligibility to take the CMA/RMA examination with certification obtained within six months of hire is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
  • Knowledge of clinical skills required for medical assistant certification or registration is required.
  • Personal computer skills and the ability to input and retrieve data from organizational computerized systems are required.
  • The ability to maintain patient confidentiality is required.
  • The ability to work independently and function as an integral team member with healthcare professionals is required.
  • The ability to establish effective working relationships with physicians, office staff, and employees in a team environment is required.
  • The position requires sustained alertness and concentration for computer-based and repetitive detailed work, considerable standing or walking, lifting objects weighing 20 pounds or less, and assisting with lifting and moving patients.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for examinations, including assessments, histories, vital signs, medication reconciliation, and routine hearing or vision testing.
  • Document pertinent and required information accurately in patient charts.
  • Maintain documentation standards and review charts before appointments to ensure requests and documents are in place.
  • Administer treatments as requested by physicians.
  • Obtain specimens for urine testing, phlebotomy, and related procedures.
  • Perform laboratory tests as directed by physicians.
  • Set up and assist physicians with procedures such as laceration repair and Pap or pelvic examinations.
  • Schedule outside tests or procedures, including x-ray and magnetic resonance imaging, in other departments or facilities.
  • Prepare patients for tests and procedures by providing appropriate instructions.
  • Coordinate admissions and referrals, call in prescriptions, and perform related patient coordination duties.
  • Stock examination rooms with supplies and conduct daily inventory of supplies, reporting items that need to be ordered.
  • Assist with appointment scheduling in the electronic medical record system.
  • Screen calls and determine urgency, the need for appointments, or whether telephone advice is sufficient.
  • Assist with completing miscellaneous patient forms, including workers' compensation and disability forms.
  • Attend required staff, educational, and other meetings.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by nurses, the practice manager, or physician.
  • Provide general nursing functions under provider direction, record vital signs and immunizations, obtain patient histories, and provide clinical information and support to providers.
  • Educate patients and families about medications, treatments, care, and referrals.
Desired Qualifications
  • Electronic medical record experience is highly desirable.
