Requirements
  • Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.
  • Successful completion of additional education in Mental Health and Substance Use as required by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives limits and conditions for licensed practical nurses.
  • Successful completion of additional training in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.
  • Two years of recent experience providing acute or community health nursing care or services, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in nursing practice related to clients with psychiatric illness who are undergoing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of concurrent disorders, substance use and abuse, and harm reduction strategies, including assessment and intervention.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of conceptual models of psychiatric care, including person- and family-centered care, recovery-oriented mental illness care, and psychosocial rehabilitation methodology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act as it applies to the rights and obligations of clients and staff.
  • Demonstrated skill in nursing within an autonomous scope of practice and adherence to standards of care relevant to the designated client population.
  • Demonstrated skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in developing and delivering educational programs and materials for clients and families based on education theories, principles, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy to operate a computerized client care information system and applicable word-processing, spreadsheet, and database software applications.

Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized direct nursing care to clients undergoing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for conditions including treatment-resistant depression, including physical and psychosocial screening and assessments and participation in developing and revising interdisciplinary care plans.
  • Advocate for and facilitate informed choices and consent, and educate clients and families about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, including its purpose, risks, benefits, side effects, consent rights, management, and other treatment options.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships, provide emotional support, identify learning needs and readiness, incorporate client and family priorities into care plans, and monitor progress against treatment goals.
  • Consult and collaborate with peers, caregivers, and the interdisciplinary care team to resolve care concerns, consent issues, ethical dilemmas, and coordination-of-care needs; participate in rounds and care conferences and advocate for client rights.
  • Document client and family perspectives, nursing assessments, education, pre-procedure findings, informed consent, care, risks, reports, and rationale for client-centered care and treatment planning in accordance with professional and organizational standards.
  • Administer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation using the electronic device according to client-specific orders and physician-specified treatment parameters, monitor responses and side effects, and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Use appropriate supplies and equipment, maintain equipment, troubleshoot malfunctions with technical staff, and handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials and sharps according to policy.
  • Identify significant or life-threatening changes in client condition, escalate concerns, intervene as directed, evaluate outcomes, initiate appropriate hospital response resources, arrange transfers, and provide systematic reports to receiving nursing staff.
  • Respond to staff or visitor injuries, Code Blue or Code White emergencies, hazardous spills, fires, and aggressive or disruptive behavior; notify designated staff and complete incident reports.
  • Conduct psychosocial assessments and provide trauma-informed, culturally safe, recovery-oriented, and evidence-informed care to clients experiencing mental or emotional distress and crisis; monitor psychopharmacologic side effects or toxicities when applicable and escalate care.
  • Screen Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation referrals with the physician using inclusion and exclusion criteria, communicate referral status, facilitate discharge planning, and refer clients to community services.
  • Support appointment scheduling and coordination, and prioritize emergent situations alongside routine procedures in response to changing workload and treatment requirements.
  • Participate in program development by attending meetings, drafting or revising client care plans, and providing input to improve client and family care and safe, efficient unit operations.
  • Guide the clinical experience of assigned students and new staff and help orient new hires to unit policies and procedures.
  • Set measurable professional-development goals with the Manager, review current literature and research, identify relevant theories and trends, and develop a development plan with the Clinical Nurse Educator and Manager.
  • Apply a research approach to clinical problem-solving by reviewing relevant resources, applying research findings, and evaluating results in collaboration with clinical and operational leaders.
  • Participate in approved nursing and interdisciplinary research and special projects, including collecting, integrating, interpreting, and summarizing data and providing updates for research and project teams.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

$1.3M funding will help more Indigenous elders in Chilliwack with at-home care. Published 8:45 am Saturday, March 14, 2026 An at-home program that offers care to Indigenous elders in the Fraser Valley will be expanding, with the main focus on Chilliwack, thanks to $1.3 million in new funding. The Indigenous Caregiver Support Model (ICSM) is a home-based program that supports elders with "complex needs to age safely at home and in their community," according to a Fraser Health press release. It is one of five programs in B.C. benefitting from a total of $6.3 million in funding from Health Research BC over the next three years. The funding will advance research to help B.C. seniors age comfortably in their own home. The ICSM program was launched in 2023 as a pilot project and has supported 33 elders and their caregivers in the Eastern Fraser Valley, including Chilliwack. Its aim is to reduce caregiver strain and improve elder wellbeing by providing culturally safe, coordinated in-home support, training, and financial assistance for Indigenous families caring for elders. It is co-designed by Fraser Health Indigenous Health, Stó:lō Service Agency, First Nations Health Authority, and Métis Nation British Columbia. "This model is an example of what is possible when care is built on relationships, trust and community," said Amanda LaBoucane, interim vice president, Indigenous Health and Cultural Safety. "Many elders and caregivers in the Chilliwack area have experienced firsthand the impacts of residential schools and the child welfare system. By strengthening caregiver capacity and confidence while bridging into integrated clinical care teams run by and for Indigenous people, we see improved health and wellness and stronger relationships within and between communities." The program is currently operating in the Fraser Valley, including Chilliwack, but the expansion will focus on urban Chilliwack as that is an identified need, said Carrie Stefanson with Fraser Health. Caregivers receive skills training and an honorarium to help reduce the economic strain of caregiving, while elders receive regular home visits from Indigenous-led clinical teams who provide culturally safe, relationship-based care, rooted in trust, kindness and respect, according to a Fraser Health.
