Requirements
  • Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
  • Maintain a minimum of 2 years of experience working with patients in the intended area of specialty.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain and record pertinent patient histories from patients, charts, and the computerized ultrasound reporting system.
  • Use cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures according to anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic information and images.
  • Use independent judgment during sonographic examinations to differentiate accurately between normal and pathological findings.
  • Analyze sonograms, synthesize sonographic information and medical history, and communicate findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Complete examination data entry for each patient in the computerized reporting system.
  • Assume responsibility for the safety and comfort of patients within the sonographer's care.
  • Maintain a procedure log according to policy.
  • Complete the billing process as indicated.
  • Participate in maintaining accreditation.
  • Maintain a clean work environment and follow infection-control, regulatory, and organizational regulations and policies.
  • Clean probes according to manufacturers' instructions after each patient and wipe down machines after the last patient of the day.
  • Stock examination rooms and inform supervision when stock items run low.
  • Aid in orienting new staff and precept students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
  • Active certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography in the appropriate specialty or attainment within one year of employment or transfer.
  • Current compliance with continuing medical education requirements for the appropriate specialty or attainment within one year.
