Requirements
  • Current LIUNA membership with journey person classification under the applicable collective bargaining agreement is required.
  • Proficient knowledge of the Caltrans Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Ability to read and understand traffic control plans and permits.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and prioritize workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in high-volume outdoor locations with multiple interruptions throughout the day.
  • Ability to recognize dangers using hearing and vision and take safe action in stressful situations.
  • Ability to understand traffic signals, signs, traffic plans, and customer requests.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, the public, and team members.
  • Ability to follow company and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices guidelines for safe, well-managed work zones.
  • Valid California driver's license with a clean, insurable driving record.
  • Experience driving medium-duty vehicles and towing trailers.
  • Valid ATSSA flagging certification.
  • Valid ATSSA traffic control technician certification.
  • Valid ATSSA traffic control supervisor certification.
  • OSHA 10 certification.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • First aid/CPR certification.
  • TMA certification.
  • Completion of all internal training required for lead advancement.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and place traffic cones weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms; sit, stoop, or kneel; and lift, carry, pull, place, and assemble traffic control signs.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods while flagging in varied weather and at different times of day or night.
  • Required vision abilities include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos; write clear instructions and correspondence; read, understand, and implement traffic control plans; and present information effectively in one-on-one and small-group situations.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise job sites and provide onsite leadership and supervision to traffic-control crews to execute traffic-control work safely.
  • Develop and maintain strong knowledge of work-zone setup and professional traffic-control responsibilities.
  • Provide customer service by arriving on time and maintaining well-managed work zones.
  • Implement traffic plans and permits.
  • Complete daily Job Hazard Analyses and conduct tailgate meetings.
  • Serve as the onsite client contact.
  • Maintain a consistent focus on safety throughout job functions.
  • Manage daily work-zone setup, maintenance, and teardown to meet customer, state, federal, and company expectations.
  • Perform traffic-control scopes, including flagging setups, single- and multi-lane closures, road closures, detours, freeway closures, specialty projects, and field supervision.
  • Assist with onsite training and development of traffic-control employees in collaboration with safety and training and field operations.
  • Maintain job-site compliance through employee evaluations, job-site inspections, onsite training, and performance reviews.
  • Drive company trucks and tow and operate towable equipment.
  • Keep truck equipment organized and in working order.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A high school diploma is preferred.
  • Three years of experience in a traffic-control lead role or equivalent is preferred.
  • Bilingual ability in English and Spanish is a plus but is not required.
