About the job
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Paramedic, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or Medical Assistant (MA) training with the ability to read telemetry monitors is preferred.
- Knowledge of computer systems and/or prior clerical experience is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy is required.
- The ability to communicate effectively, adapt to changing needs, and prioritize work is required.
- At least one year of phlebotomy experience is required.
- A current Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Perform phlebotomy and electrocardiograms (EKGs), and assist with transporting, lifting, pulling, and boosting patients weighing up to 50 pounds for positioning while using proper body mechanics.
- Place patients on cardiac monitors, including bending, lifting, and reaching to bedside and central-station monitoring equipment.
- Maintain and clean department equipment and supplies used for patient monitoring, and maintain current knowledge of emergency-department technology.
- Transport laboratory specimens to the laboratory in a timely manner.
- Complete STAT orders in a timely manner.
- Complete electrocardiograms before blood work.
- Observe, interpret, and report changes in cardiac rhythms, including irregular heartbeats, arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest, and immediately assist as needed.
- Troubleshoot alarms at the central alarm station and bedside, adjusting them when indicated in consultation with nursing staff and physicians.
- Document and update patient information at the central monitoring station using two patient identifiers; record rhythms for review and document them in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Report equipment repairs in a timely manner.
- Remain at the central monitoring station unless otherwise directed by the charge nurse, nurse manager, or designee.
- Assist with training new staff in medical monitoring systems.
- Assist with overall emergency-department flow and provide customer service to create a positive patient experience.
- Remain calm in high-stress situations and use appropriate communication skills.
