Requirements
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.
  • Family physicians must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient certification.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification.
Responsibilities
  • Examine patients and take their histories.
  • Order diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures.
  • Advise patients on health care, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Consult and refer patients to other medical practitioners.
  • Act as a patient advocate.
  • Prescribe and administer medications, treatments, inoculations, and vaccinations.
Desired Qualifications
  • College of Family Physicians of Canada emergency room certification is considered an asset.
  • The physician may also provide office-based comprehensive primary care and inpatient care if desired.
