What believers are saying

  • Q4 FY26 revenue hit $2.05 billion, with non-GAAP EPS of $1.74.
  • Management guided Q1 FY27 revenue to $2.2-$2.4 billion and accelerating AI optics.
  • PhotonLink launches in September 2026 and co-packaged optics start shipping in December.

What critics are saying

  • Revenue now hinges on hyperscalers; any AWS or Microsoft pause hits 2027 growth.
  • Indium phosphide wafer capacity still depends on AXT’s Beijing supply through June 2029.
  • Chinese module retaliation or FCC rule changes can strand Asian capacity and delay shipments.

What makes Coherent unique

  • Coherent owns the largest 6-inch indium phosphide fab, expanded in Sherman, Texas.
  • NVIDIA invested $2 billion in March 2026, securing Coherent’s AI optics roadmap.
  • Datacenter revenue reached $1.62 billion in Q4 FY26, 79% of total revenue.

Lumentum and Coherent beat earnings estimates but face contrasting market reactions

CNBC's Jim Cramer analysed the contrasting market reactions to earnings reports from optical technology companies Lumentum Holdings and Coherent Corp. on 12 August. Lumentum reported fourth quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of $1.01 billion, up 109% year-over-year, beating estimates. Non-GAAP earnings per share reached $3.23, exceeding expectations by $0.26. The company guided first quarter fiscal 2027 revenue between $1.225 billion and $1.275 billion, with EPS of $4.05 to $4.35. Coherent posted fourth quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of $2.05 billion, a 34% year-over-year increase, surpassing estimates by $70 million. Non-GAAP EPS of $1.74 beat expectations by $0.12. The company forecast first quarter fiscal 2027 revenue between $2.2 billion and $2.4 billion. Coherent ramps InP capacity.

Coherent ramps InP capacity. Thursday 13th August 2026 Photonics leader ramps 6-inch InP production and prepares to launch its PhotonLink integrated optics platform at ECOC 2026. Coherent has reported record quarterly revenue of $2.05 billion and set a new target of reaching $3 billion in quarterly sales within the next year, driven by accelerating demand for AI data centre infrastructure and optical connectivity. The company is continuing to expand production of 6-inch indium phosphide (InP) wafers at its manufacturing facilities in Sherman, Texas, and Sweden. According to CEO Jim Anderson, the transition from 3-inch to 6-inch production is progressing ahead of schedule, with output expected to double year-on-year by the end of the current quarter before doubling again by the end of 2027. Higher-capacity production is also delivering improved device yields for lasers and photodiodes used in optical interconnects. Anderson said AI data centres are rapidly transitioning from copper to optical connectivity, creating strong demand for Coherent's photonics portfolio. The company expects new technologies, including co-packaged optics (CPO), near-packaged optics (NPO) and optical circuit switches (OCS), to become increasingly important as hyperscalers adopt more integrated optical architectures. Coherent also confirmed it will unveil PhotonLink, its new integrated optics platform, at ECOC 2026 in Malaga. The platform is designed to provide customers with a fully integrated optical solution, with initial commercial revenue expected before the end of the year. For the quarter ending June 30, 2026, Coherent reported annual revenue of $7.12 billion, up 23% year-on-year, with growth driven primarily by AI-related data centre demand. The company expects revenue to increase to approximately $2.3 billion in the current quarter as production capacity continues to expand.
