Requirements
  • A nurse practitioner must be a graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a master's degree in nursing.
  • A nurse practitioner must hold national certification from a recognized advanced practice registered nurse certification center.
  • A nurse practitioner must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional registered nurse and advanced practice registered nurse in West Virginia.
  • A nurse practitioner must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and Advanced Trauma Life Support certifications.
  • A physician assistant must hold a bachelor's or master's degree as a medical/surgical physician assistant, as applicable.
  • A physician assistant must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved physician assistant training program.
  • A physician assistant must hold certification from the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • A physician assistant must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.

  • The role requires the ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • The role requires working irregular or extended hours and around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Manage comprehensive and individualized care for emergency medicine patients and their families in the department of emergency medicine and during immediate post-discharge ambulatory care, coordinating hospitalization when necessary.
  • Complete pre-procedure evaluations and integrated assessments.
  • Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with emergency medicine faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with department of emergency medicine clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate department of emergency medicine discharge by coordinating services and tests required for outpatient follow-up appointments.
  • Develop individualized emergency medicine plans of care, including teaching, discharge planning, referrals, or admission as necessary.
  • Identify unstable or complex emergency medicine situations and facilitate appropriate intervention.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in ambulatory settings or after admission.
  • Collect outcome measures when applicable.
  • Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making and management of patient and family needs.
  • Use patient-care equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
  • Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Promote an environment that supports patient and family learning preferences, priorities, and readiness.
  • Maintain current knowledge and complete identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for emergency medicine patients.
  • Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate.
  • Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient's medical record according to approved policies and compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in emergency medicine practice that improve patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
  • Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
  • Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to emergency medicine patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports when appropriate.
  • Review and interpret emergency medicine data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the principal investigator.
  • Assist emergency medicine faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Acute care or emergency medicine experience is preferred.
  • American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is encouraged.
  • ACNP or FNP certification is considered for nurse practitioners.
  • Master's-level education as a medical/surgical physician assistant is preferred.
