Responsibilities
  • Provide 24/7 operational and clinical leadership for the Emergency Department to ensure safe, timely, efficient, and patient-centered emergency care.
  • Maintain accountability for the execution, validation, and reliability of Emergency Department processes affecting patient experience, quality outcomes, patient safety, staffing effectiveness, throughput, regulatory compliance, and staff readiness.
  • Maintain a visible, hands-on leadership presence across all shifts and serve as the operational authority during assigned coverage.
  • Manage Emergency Department throughput, patient flow, and real-time operational decisions in a high-acuity environment.
  • Partner with the Director of Critical Care and leadership to translate organizational priorities into consistent frontline practice.
  • Maintain accountability for unit operations and performance across all shifts.
  • Execute, validate, follow through on, and escalate operational, quality, and patient experience standards.
  • Hire, assign, direct, evaluate, discipline, and recommend termination of employees using independent judgment and discretion.
  • Review operational, patient experience, and quality outcomes with direct reports and adjust unit operations accordingly.
  • Build working relationships across Critical Care, Medical Surgical, Telemetry, Maternal Child, Surgical Services, Case Management, Radiology, Laboratory, Environmental Services, Security, and ancillary services.
  • Collaborate with Nursing Leadership to ensure safe staffing, appropriate skill mix, and equitable assignments.
  • Manage real-time staffing challenges, including unplanned absences.
  • Ensure appropriate coverage for high-risk patients, including constant observation.
  • Communicate staffing updates and escalate trends using data-supported recommendations.
  • Respond to Protests of Assignment using the Management Response form in accordance with policy.
  • Conduct patient experience rounds during assigned coverage.
  • Assess responsiveness, communication, comfort, pain management, and patient understanding of care.
  • Initiate real-time service recovery and document interventions.
  • Review patient experience data and address unit-level trends.
  • Validate patient experience tactics, including bedside shift report and hourly rounding, through direct observation.
  • Provide real-time coaching and reinforce best practices.
  • Escalate repeated non-compliance patterns through appropriate channels.
  • Lead real-time Emergency Department patient flow from arrival through disposition.
  • Monitor Emergency Department census, arrivals, holds, and throughput metrics.
  • Identify and remove barriers related to diagnostics, consultations, transport, and discharge readiness.
  • Collaborate with physicians, case management, ancillary services, and receiving units to reduce delays and Emergency Department boarding.
  • Balance throughput decisions with patient safety, staffing capacity, and patient experience.
  • Respond to patient surges, emergency medical services volume, disasters, staffing shortages, and system disruptions.
  • Lead throughput rounds when inpatient boarding holds occur.
  • Ensure clarity of care plans, disposition goals, and identified barriers.
  • Ensure timely intensive care unit downgrades and appropriate utilization of critical care services.
  • Track unresolved throughput issues and escalate delays affecting safety or Emergency Department length of stay.
  • Monitor key performance indicators, including medication scanning, hand hygiene, restraints, falls, and observation compliance.
  • Collaborate with Risk and Performance Improvement on occurrence reviews and follow-up actions.
  • Identify trends, near misses, and improvement opportunities.
  • Conduct real-time root cause analysis in response to unexpected patient safety events as needed.
  • Support prevention strategies for hospital-acquired conditions and patient safety outcomes.
  • Validate prevention practices and timely interventions related to patient quality and safety outcomes.
  • Partner with Infection Prevention, Wound Care, Pharmacy, and Quality teams.
  • Conduct and document routine environment-of-care and safety rounds.
  • Maintain continuous readiness for regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Work with Emergency Management and the Environment of Care team to develop action plans for environmental risks.
  • Identify and escalate environmental, equipment, and safety risks.
  • Conduct employee rounding across all shifts.
  • Provide real-time coaching, feedback, and support.
  • Facilitate safety huddles and reinforce quality and safety priorities.
  • Escalate recurring performance or operational concerns.
  • Lead or support pre-shift huddles and unit communication.
  • Encourage staff participation in shared governance councils.
  • Support American Nurses Credentialing Center initiatives.
  • Support compliance with mandatory education, competencies, and certifications.
  • Collaborate with Nursing Professional Development, Human Resources, and Employee Health on annual employee requirements.
  • Track compliance and escalate gaps for remediation.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Three to five years of nursing leadership experience in the Emergency Department is preferred.
  • National certification in nursing leadership or a clinical specialty is preferred.

St. John's Riverside Hospital St. John's Riverside Hospital, a leading community-based healthcare provider in Yonkers, New York, recently experienced a data breach that potentially exposed personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) of at least 2,238 individuals across the U.S. According to a disclosure filed with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Nov. 14, 2025, the breach originated from unauthorized access to a limited number of employee email accounts. The incident was discovered in September 2025, when the hospital detected suspicious activity involving the distribution of phishing emails and an attempt to reroute payment funds. The compromised email accounts contained a range of sensitive information. For some individuals, the exposed data included personally identifiable information (PII) such as name, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license or state identification number and financial account number. For others, protected health information (PHI) was involved, including health insurance details, medical condition information, treatment provider name, medical record number, treatment cost information and diagnosis or treatment information. St. John's Riverside Hospital's response. Upon discovering the breach, St. John's Riverside Hospital immediately took steps to secure its systems. The hospital changed passwords, revoked session tokens, reset multifactor authentication and engaged data security and privacy professionals to investigate the incident. The unauthorized activity was contained and remediated, and the hospital conducted a thorough analysis to identify affected individuals.
