Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology and the ability to type accurately at speed are required.
  • Knowledge of an Electronic Medical Records system is required.
  • Strong attention to detail, expert scribe keyboarding skills, and the ability to understand and correctly spell medical terminology and numbers as percentages are required.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • The ability to work effectively with others and provide customer service to patients is required.
  • Proficient keyboarding skills and use of Electronic Medical Records and image management systems are required.

  • Employees must be able to walk, sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 pounds.

  • Visual and auditory acuity, including color, depth, peripheral vision, and focus-adjustment abilities, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Function as a scribe using retina-specific ophthalmology terminology.
  • Prepare patients and rooms for treatments and minor procedures as directed by the physician.
  • Obtain patients’ past and current medical and ophthalmic histories, including medications, allergies, and family history of eye problems.
  • Identify potential patient concerns and bring them to the attention of the Office Coordinator or physician.
  • Measure and record distance, near, and pinhole visual acuity, and perform preliminary refraction using objective equipment.
  • Measure intraocular pressures using applanation tonometry, pneumatonometry, and/or a tonopen, and check pupillary responses and defects.
  • Perform basic visual field testing and provide patient education as directed by the physician.
  • Measure and record patients’ vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate.
  • Complete and maintain Ophthalmic Scribe Certification and, upon certification, complete computerized order entry under the physician’s direction and applicable guidelines.
  • Instill eye drops as directed by the physician.
  • Assist with applying dressings, shields, and eye patches.
  • Enter examination and procedure codes into the Electronic Medical Records system.
  • Ensure accurate procedure coding and charges for procedures and drugs, and use correct diagnosis codes.
  • Clean and stock examination, treatment, laser, and other assigned rooms, and keep drug counts up to date.
  • Provide customer service to patients.
  • Obtain patient consent for treatment and procedures when required.
  • Perform optical coherence tomography on patients accurately and efficiently, and assist the physician with treatments when needed.
  • Assist with patient transfers.
  • Travel to other locations as assigned.
  • Perform clerical functions such as filing, keyboarding, scheduling patients, cleaning, stocking, and other assigned tasks.
  • Assist in other departments and at other locations as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Certified Ophthalmic Technician certification is preferred.
  • Ophthalmic Scribe Certification is preferred.
