About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 9 years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 5 years focused on AI/ML systems in production and hands-on generative AI development.
  • An expert software engineering background in Python or a similar language, with strong design capability for distributed, scalable, and maintainable systems.
  • Deep experience designing distributed systems and event-driven architectures for production AI workloads.
  • Deep expertise in cloud platforms, including mastery of AWS services and AWS generative AI offerings.
  • A proven track record of architecting and shipping complex agentic systems in production across multiple teams or engagements.
  • Mastery of AI frameworks and orchestration tools, with sound judgment about when to adopt existing tools versus build.
  • Deep experience with evaluation frameworks and observability tools for large language model applications, including establishing these practices where they do not yet exist.
  • Deep expertise in AI safety, responsible AI principles, prompt-injection defenses, personally identifiable information handling, and AI governance and compliance in production.
  • Extensive experience designing retrieval-augmented generation architectures, including chunking strategies, embedding models, vector databases, and advanced retrieval techniques.
  • API and systems design experience, including architecting and integrating internal and third-party services at scale.
  • Advanced cost-optimization expertise, including token economics, caching strategies, model routing, and quantization.
  • Strong working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native AI architecture patterns.
  • Expertise in machine learning operations and AI infrastructure, including model versioning, monitoring, deployment automation, and reproducibility.
  • Demonstrable day-to-day use and expert command of AI-forward coding tools such as Claude Code and Cursor.
  • A track record of organizational-level technical leadership and mentoring, with influence extending beyond the immediate team.
  • Problem-solving and stakeholder-communication skills sufficient to navigate ambiguous technical and business challenges with sound judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Define AI architecture and technical strategy, and lead implementation throughout the lifecycle from design through production.
  • Build scalable machine-learning platforms, pipelines, and workflow orchestration supporting model development and event-driven, asynchronous operations at scale.
  • Architect and build large language model-powered systems, including prompt engineering, function and tool calling, multi-agent orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation patterns, vector databases, embeddings, and streaming responses.
  • Design and develop APIs and backend services that integrate AI capabilities with enterprise systems and third-party platforms.
  • Lead model development and optimization, and guide work from research to production so promising approaches become reliable, production-ready systems.
  • Ensure reliability, security, and scalability across deployed AI systems, including production logging, monitoring, and debugging.
  • Use modern AI assistants such as Claude and Cursor in daily work to deliver higher-quality work efficiently.
  • Co-define the AI roadmap with leadership and contribute as a peer in strategic technical conversations.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders, translating technical depth into actionable decisions.
  • Engage with product, engineering, and data teams to align AI work with broader business priorities.
  • Define and champion AI engineering standards that shape how the organization builds and operates AI systems.
  • Mentor across the organization, shape engineering culture, and develop future technical leaders.
  • Own high-stakes architectural decisions with significant organizational and cross-engagement impact.
  • Drive technical vision by defining what gets built and how AI engineering evolves over time.

About the Company

Robots and Pencils

Production-ready AI implementations for enterprises

Robots & Pencils provides enterprise AI engineering services. It builds production-ready AI systems that companies can deploy quickly, delivering measurable business impact in weeks rather than months. The team blends advanced engineering with human-centered design, combining “robots” (AI/engineering) with “pencils” (UX and product design) to create solutions that are both technically solid and easy to use. The company works with large enterprises across sectors including Consumer Products and Retail, Education, Energy, Financial Services, Healthcare, and Manufacturing, and operates with small, senior teams instead of large consulting firms. Its delivery centers span Canada, the U.S., Eastern Europe, and Latin America, making it a nimble alternative to traditional global system integrators. The goal is to help enterprises move quickly and confidently with AI initiatives, delivering solutions that are reliable, scalable, and aligned with real business needs.
