Responsibilities
  • Fill pre-exchange and missing-dose orders with the medication and deliver the medication.
  • Fill unit-dose carts according to scheduled pick lists and updated pick-list reports, including operating unit-dose packaging equipment.
  • Exchange unit-dose carts according to schedule.
  • Adjust unit-dose drawers to reflect patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, and clarify patient locations and status with nursing and medical administration staff.
  • Answer telephone calls and perform other assigned tasks.
  • Prepare intravenous admixtures, including piggybacks, large-volume parenterals, and chemotherapy, using aseptic techniques for final checking by a Clinical Pharmacist.
  • Maintain predetermined stock levels.
  • Use the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture computer system to maintain records and produce reports.
  • Work with the Lead Technician or Supervisor to respond to changing use patterns and resolve problems.
  • Use autogenerated reports to replenish inpatient automated dispensing cabinets, including Omnicell, with sufficient medication and supply quantities.
  • Replenish medications and supplies for inpatient units according to on-demand orders requested by nursing staff.
  • Conduct monthly inspections of patient-care units and other medical-center and outpatient-clinic areas where medications are stored, administered, or dispensed.
  • Maintain proper records of medications and supplies issued to provide data for reports.
  • Use unit-dose packaging equipment to prepare unit doses for dispensing through the Inpatient Pharmacy section.
  • Prepare labels for repackaged medications, including barcodes and specialized labeling such as half-tablet doses and oral-liquid syringes, in accordance with applicable laws, official packaging requirements, and professional practice standards.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
  • Record pertinent information for each packaged medication canister.
  • Examine prescriptions and refill requests against computer medication profiles for administrative irregularities and refer appropriate issues to a pharmacist.
  • Enter refill requests accurately and efficiently into the computer database.
  • Remove prescription labels and related documents from computer printers, correlate them by patient, select and count the correct medications, apply labels to prepared containers, and place completed orders in trays or bags for final pharmacist checking.
  • Verify patient identification before releasing medications at the pickup window.
  • Prepare completed prescriptions designated for mailing and transport them to the appropriate pickup area.
  • Operate the ScriptPro system for prescription filling and perform preventive maintenance and cleaning of the ScriptPro filling system.
