Requirements
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Be 21 years of age or older.
  • Be a United States citizen.
  • Meet Department of Public Safety Standards and Training physical standards.
  • Have reading comprehension, report writing, and retention abilities.
  • Satisfactorily complete an Oregon Department of Corrections background investigation.
  • Pass the National Testing Network test with a minimum score of 70 percent in all areas.
  • Have a good employee work history and a history of law-abiding behavior.
  • Pass a psychological evaluation and risk assessment as required by House Bill 2936.
  • Have no evidence of substance abuse.
  • Be proficient using computers.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Be subject to testing for prohibited drug use.
  • Pass a Criminal Justice Information Services fingerprint-based background check and maintain Criminal Justice Information Services eligibility; a felony conviction disqualifies applicants.
  • Complete the Form I-9 and confirm authorization to work in the United States within three days of hire.
  • Include dates and duties of all relevant positions in the application work experience section; applicants must provide education or work experience meeting minimum qualifications.
Responsibilities
  • Set limits, provide good role-model examples, and assist in facilitating positive change in the lives of adults in custody.
  • Work in a team setting to maintain order within the institution, enforce rules and regulations, and provide care to ensure safety and security.
  • Help adults in custody follow agency guidelines and standards by monitoring their activities and supervising their work assignments.
  • Conduct cell checks and searches of adults in custody and their living quarters for contraband.
  • Settle disputes and enforce discipline.
  • Observe, inspect, and report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards.
  • Complete the Basic Corrections Course, classroom training, online courses, health and fitness classes, force-skills training, and the Field Training Evaluation Program during the probationary period.
Desired Qualifications
  • The National Testing Network assessment evaluates teamwork, ability to take control of situations, support for management goals, integrity, and ability to support and communicate with staff.
  • Acceptable ratings include use of grammar and understanding of written content.
  • Low-risk ratings are sought for unprofessional involvement with offenders and abrasive conduct or misuse of authority.
  • Experience in a public safety occupation is assessed as a low-risk rating.
