  • Ability to lead through influence in a cross-functional environment spanning avionics, flight software, GNC, mechanical, thermal, systems, ground, and mission operations.
Responsibilities
  • Own the RF and EMC architecture from early design through development, integration, test, qualification, and flight operations.
  • Own end-to-end link design, including frequency planning, link budgets, modulation and coding trades, data rate and margin analysis, and coverage across every mission phase.
  • Lead design, selection, and qualification of RF hardware, including transceivers, transponders, LNAs, power amplifiers, filters, diplexers, switches, and coaxial and waveguide assemblies.

  • Analyze and mitigate high-power and space-environment RF effects, including multipaction, passive intermodulation, corona, and thermal effects on RF performance.
  • Lead spectrum licensing and coordination, including FCC, NTIA, and ITU filings, frequency coordination, and compliance with ground network partner requirements.
  • Partner with the ground segment on ground station and network provider selection and end-to-end RF compatibility testing between vehicle and ground.
  • Own the vehicle EMC program, including the EMC control plan, emissions and susceptibility requirements such as MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464, and allocation of limits to each subsystem and unit.
  • Define grounding, bonding, shielding, and harness EMC requirements with avionics, mechanical, and integration teams.
  • Perform system-level compatibility analysis, including RF self-compatibility between transmitters and receivers, intra-system EMC, ESD and spacecraft charging, ordnance and pyro safety margins, and launch vehicle compatibility.
  • Build RF and EMC test infrastructure, including RF test sets, ground station emulators, antenna measurement capability, pre-compliance EMC setups, and automated RF test.
  • Plan and execute RF and EMC qualification and acceptance campaigns, including antenna pattern measurements, RF performance over thermal vacuum, end-to-end compatibility tests, and conducted and radiated emissions and susceptibility testing.
  • Partner with avionics on radio and processor interfaces, RF and high-speed PCB layout, board-level EMC design, and debugging, driving root-cause resolution across RF, hardware, and software on the bench and during integrated test campaigns.
  • Provide technical leadership across RF, antenna, EMC, and RF test efforts.
  • Help hire, manage, mentor, and develop RF and EMC engineers as the team grows.
  • Establish engineering processes, including design standards, design reviews, RF and EMC requirements verification, configuration management, and test discipline appropriate for flight-grade hardware.
  • Help define RF and EMC requirements, interfaces, link and power budgets, verification plans, and interference-handling approaches for the vehicle.
  • Work closely with avionics, flight software, GNC, propulsion, thermal, mechanical, systems, ground software, and mission operations to close interfaces, deliver flight RF hardware, and field an integrated flight system.
  • Work closely with the founders and early engineering team to shape the technical roadmap, engineering culture, hiring plan, and long-term RF and communications strategy.
  • Represent the RF and EMC function in cross-disciplinary design reviews, customer conversations, investor diligence, vendor discussions, regulatory filings, and mission planning as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated flight heritage, with RF hardware or antennas the candidate helped design or build that have flown and operated on orbit.
  • Experience leading RF, antenna, EMC, or communications teams.
  • Experience managing engineers in a startup, aerospace company, defense contractor, launch company, or other high-reliability technical environment.
  • Experience with UHF, S-band, X-band, or Ka-band spacecraft communications, including TT&C and high-rate payload downlinks.

About the company

Pillar Space offers reusable satellites in orbit that act as rentable infrastructure for other companies’ payloads. A customer launches a payload in a standard adapter, and Pillar Space’s satellite autonomously docks with it in low Earth orbit to supply power, data, thermal management, mobility, and mission operations for the lease, with an optional capsule return to Earth. It differentiates itself by providing on-orbit service via autonomous docking instead of building the customer’s own spacecraft, supported by a team with experience from Northrop Grumman, SpaceX, and Impulse Space and backers including South Park Commons. The goal is to provide persistent, ready-to-use orbital infrastructure that lowers the cost and complexity of conducting microgravity experiments and manufacturing in space, aiming for a first mission window in 2028.

What believers are saying

  • South Park Commons highlighted Pillar in July 2026, signaling elite early validation.
  • Pillar’s website says UPLINK ACQUIRED PILLAR-01 NOMINAL, implying active mission progress.
  • Microgravity manufacturing demand strengthened in 2026 through Varda launches and BioOrbit programs.

What critics are saying

  • No disclosed funding in 2026 leaves a capital-intensive hardware program dangerously undercapitalized.
  • Northrop Grumman’s MRV launched July 2026, intensifying servicing competition before Pillar’s 2028 debut.
  • If 2028 slips, customers choose Vast, Varda, or Northrop; Pillar loses the category.

What makes Pillar Space unique

  • Only commercial team docked and undocked spacecraft three times, per Pillar and SPC.
  • Pillar sells reusable orbital infrastructure, not one-off missions, with power, data, thermal, mobility.
  • FIRST mission window 2028 targets rent-time-on-orbit demand before competitors scale.
