Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, such as a General Educational Development credential or High School Proficiency Examination.
  • At least one year of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit, or in other work involving the safeguarding of life and property.
  • A valid California Driver License.
  • A Basic Peace Officers' Standards and Training Certificate issued by the California Department of Justice Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training before field work assignment and within twelve months of hire.
  • The physical ability to walk, stand, run, or sit for prolonged periods; bend, stoop, kneel, crawl; perform moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; and work in conditions involving possible physical injury and other hazards inherent in police work.
  • Satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye.
  • The ability to wear a police uniform, bulletproof vest, and required police gear.
  • The ability to work flexible, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays, including five eight-hour days or four ten-hour days.
  • Successful completion of an employment, character, and background investigation, polygraph test, drug test, psychological screening, judicial and driving-record review, and medical examination.
  • A current history of careful and responsible motor vehicle operation and compliance with the employer's driver-record eligibility conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Administer first aid to students, staff, and visitors to provide immediate emergency medical care.
  • Arrest individuals engaging in illegal activities to apprehend suspects and prevent further illegal activities.
  • Collaborate with community agencies, including law enforcement, courts, and health care organizations, on cases and investigations involving criminal, gang, and vandalism activity.
  • Communicate safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Enforce applicable federal, state, District, and municipal laws, rules, and policies.
  • Enforce college policies, including student ticketing and disciplinary procedures, and implement campus Police Department processes and the student code of conduct.
  • Escort students, assigned personnel, and visitors to provide safety and site security.
  • Implement safety escorts to ensure the safe movement of students, staff, and visitors on campus.
  • Investigate potential campus crimes and student-related community incidents, resolve conflicts, take appropriate action, and refer matters to outside agencies when appropriate.
  • Participate in unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops to convey and gather information required to perform job functions.
  • Patrol college facilities, grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, and parking lots to maintain security and deter criminal activity.
  • Prepare police reports, citations, incident reports, activity logs, memoranda, letters, and procedures to document activities and convey information.
  • Present information in classrooms, meetings, and staff orientations about public safety, law enforcement procedures, and individual rights.
  • Provide traffic and parking control to maintain efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots.
  • Report safety issues and concerns, including broken fixtures and insufficient lighting, to help maintain a safe, hazard-free environment.
  • Respond to accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, and other situations to resolve immediate safety and security concerns.
  • Respond to campus security service calls from various sources by providing information, direction, or referrals.
  • Testify in court proceedings regarding alleged illegal activity.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Desired Qualifications
  • A certificate of completion from a Peace Officers' Standards and Training academy.
  • Completion of 60 college credits, preferably in Administration of Justice.
  • Two years of verifiable work experience.
  • One year of law enforcement experience.
  • Specialized training in law enforcement, security, or a related field.
  • Experience working in an educational setting, preferably in community colleges.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students, faculty, and staff.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication.
  • Effective working relationships with people contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to participate in meetings, workshops, events, and other college functions and represent the department.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for dealing with a diverse population of students, staff, and the general public.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work extended hours or start early when required.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, maintain accuracy, and prioritize work with frequent interruptions.
  • Experience with conflict resolution in person, virtually, by email, or by phone.
  • Ability to take initiative, solve problems, work independently, and exercise good judgment about when to seek direction.
  • Understanding of regulations related to handling confidential student information.
