Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Hold national certification from one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant approved Physician Assistant training program, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Hold certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Hold Basic Life Support certification; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department’s discretion.
- Be proficient with computers.
- Have strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for cardiology patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and immediately after discharge in the ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations with cardiology faculty collaboration or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and tests required for outpatient clinic follow-up, as applicable.
- Develop individualized cardiology patient care plans, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum supported by the employee’s education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex cardiology situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergencies and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate cardiology patients and coordinate follow-up, procedures, and tests in the ambulatory setting, as applicable.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures, as applicable.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for cardiology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
- Document each patient’s care plan, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in cardiology practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role and delivery of care to cardiology patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret cardiology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist cardiology faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute care or cardiology experience.
- Advanced Certified Nurse Practitioner certification; Family Nurse Practitioners will also be considered.
- Master’s-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable.
