Requirements

  • For NC Pre-K programs, a high school diploma or GED and an associate degree in birth-through-kindergarten, child development, early childhood education, or an early-childhood-education-related field, or a Child Development Associate credential; assistants working toward the associate degree must complete at least six documented semester hours per year.
  • For Title I schools, meeting the employment requirements outlined by the Every Student Succeeds Act, Public Law 114-95.
  • For non-NC Pre-K programs, a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Maintain a Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification through the required renewal process; training is provided if needed.
  • Ability to sit and stand throughout the day and perform medium physical work, including moving objects and occasionally exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers with classroom activities, instructional activities, and general administrative support tasks.
  • Assist with implementing the total school program and maintaining an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthy environment for students.
  • Help teachers plan and organize instructional activities, evaluate activities, develop classroom licensure procedures, and prepare lesson materials.
  • Work with individual students and groups of students in different pre-kindergarten classrooms and school areas as needed.
  • Participate in district staff development and continued professional growth.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other required documents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Coordinate and assist students with special health care needs, including personal hygiene, restroom functions, diapering, mobility assistance, lifting, positioning, transferring, behavioral assistance, and Crisis Prevention and Intervention skills.
  • Support teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including becoming familiar with students' individualized education programs.
  • Assist teachers with strategies for implementing students' behavioral intervention plans.
  • Assist teachers with low- and high-tech assistive technology and augmentative communication devices in the classroom.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • For Pre-K Special Education and Blended programs, experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs.
