About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or another engineering discipline is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience in power systems design, analysis, and build, focused on high-power, high-voltage systems.
  • Perform hands-on work in heat, cold, rain, tight quarters, and at heights.
  • Work extended hours and weekends as needed to support launch operations.
  • Remain focused in hazardous environments while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds unassisted.
  • Provide 24/7 on-call support for emergencies.
  • Meet U.S. Government export-control eligibility: be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design for Starship launch-pad and Starbase power systems, including power distribution, motor control, microgrids, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Perform detailed design across the full power system, including one-line and three-line diagrams, control and relaying schematics, wiring diagrams, supervisory control and data acquisition, conduit and cable routing, grounding, and construction documentation.
  • Design control panels, power distribution, and hazardous-area systems to NEC, NFPA 79, UL 508A, NFPA 70/70E, NESC, and IEEE standards.
  • Develop protective relay settings and schemes, and perform load, short-circuit, and arc-flash studies.
  • Own sitewide power budgets, monitoring, and metering, and coordinate with utilities to ensure reliable power for mission-critical pad equipment.
  • Scale launch and grid infrastructure, including standardized designs, to meet Starship production-rate targets.
  • Integrate electrical systems with high-power equipment, motion systems, and instrumentation, and support construction, activation, testing, and field operations.
  • Manage subcontractors and design documentation to ensure installations match design intent and safety requirements.

Desired Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in a similar role.
  • A Professional Engineer license or actively pursuing one.
  • Experience with power-systems analysis software and tools, including ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PowerWorld, MATLAB, PSCAD, PSEE, or Simulink.
  • Experience performing basic load-flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, coordination, and transient-stability studies.
  • Familiarity with industrial power systems up to 345 kV, including switchgear, transformers, battery energy storage systems, variable-frequency drives, motors, distribution systems, uninterruptible power supplies and emergency backups, power generation, relaying, metering, protective devices, and networking.
  • Familiarity with industrial communications protocols and networking, including Modbus, IEEE C37.115, IEEE C37.111, and DNP3.
  • Experience with computer-aided design software, including Revit, AutoCAD, or NX.
  • Ability to lead teams, work independently, and work in dynamic, high-stress environments with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize, schedule, and implement solutions with minimal operational impact.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues quickly and provide hands-on support to technicians.

About the Company

SpaceX

Builds rockets and runs Starlink satellite internet

SpaceX builds and launches reusable rockets and spacecraft for NASA, the military, and companies, and it runs Starlink, a satellite internet service for homes and businesses. In 2020, its Dragon capsule became the first privately built spacecraft to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Falcon 9 rocket lands its first stage so the booster can fly again, which cuts launch costs, while Starlink beams internet from low-orbit satellites to small dishes for a monthly fee. SpaceX also owns xAI, maker of the Grok chatbot and owner of the social network X, and is building Starship, a fully reusable rocket meant to carry people to the Moon and Mars. Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, and it is based in Starbase, Texas.
