About the job

Requirements
  • Four to six years of experience building and shipping production web applications across the full stack.
  • Experience with a modern frontend framework; React is preferred.
  • Experience building and operating production backend services and APIs, ideally with Node.js and TypeScript, and understanding of databases and data modeling.
  • Production experience with relational databases and APIs.
  • Interest in integrating large language models and other models into a product and learning how to make inference reliable and fast at scale.
  • Ability to take ownership and drive features from initial concept to production, and communicate reasoning clearly while judging when to move quickly or align first.
Responsibilities
  • Build and ship features across the React and Vite frontend and Node, Express, and TypeScript backend, taking them from design through delivery and iteration.
  • Create interfaces and APIs that let non-technical users ask questions and receive insights, visualizations, and automated workflows.
  • Connect the application layer to the Postgres and DuckDB data stack and model inference, keeping query and inference latency low.
  • Scope, build, and ship features autonomously, make pragmatic decisions under ambiguity, and take ownership of delivered work.
  • Build internal tooling and automations to help the small team operate efficiently.
  • Treat observability, testing, and fault tolerance as part of the work, and build systems that are understandable, debuggable, and recoverable.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with analytical or columnar databases such as DuckDB or BigQuery.
  • Prior experience wrapping models or third-party APIs.

About the company

Straia provides an AI-native operating system for higher education that unifies data from SIS, LMS, and CRM into a single secure AI-ready layer. Its agentic AI lets university leaders ask questions in plain English and receive visualizations, insights, and reports on enrollment trends, student retention risk, and equity gaps. The platform handles data ingestion, mapping, and maintenance with minimal IT involvement, enabling automated analysis through AI agents. Its goal is to empower administrators with timely, actionable intelligence to guide strategy, improve student success, and optimize operations by differentiating itself with data unification across campus systems and an end-to-end, low-touch solution.

What believers are saying

  • Straia raised $1.4 million in 2025 from a16z Speedrun, Reach Capital, and JFF Ventures.
  • Its July 2026 site and careers pages show active product shipping and hiring.
  • Higher-ed leaders still drown in fragmented systems, creating urgent demand for automation.

What critics are saying

  • No public customer logos or case studies exist by September 2026.
  • Ellucian, Salesforce, and EAB already own campus workflows Straia depends on.
  • Universities resist new data layers; a single stalled pilot can kill 2027 adoption.

What makes Straia unique

  • Straia’s 2026 product unifies SIS, LMS, and CRM data into one layer.
  • Ryan Lau, Alan Chan, Nikki Dansey, and Gautam Narasimhan combine edtech and infrastructure experience.
  • Straight English queries and agentic workflows target administrators, not technical analytics teams.

Straia raises $3.1M to use AI to help colleges prevent student dropouts

Straia, a higher-education data analytics startup, has raised $3.1 million to help colleges keep students from dropping out. The seed round was led by Speedrun, the startup accelerator of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. It brings Straia's total funding to $4.5 million. The company calls itself an AI-native platform. It aims to simplify the large amounts of data held by universities for student advisers and administrators. "Schools have more data than they've ever had before," said Ryan Lau, who co-founded the company last year with Gautam Narasimhan and Nikki Dansey.
