Meta launches Muse, an AI agent emphasising safety and privacy for everyday tasks

Meta has launched Muse, a personal AI agent for users aged 18 and over in the US. The agent helps with daily tasks like scheduling and shopping, as well as long-term goals such as creating exercise plans or setting up businesses. Muse operates on a dedicated, secure virtual machine housing both the agent and user data. Users can access it through a separate app or WhatsApp. The agent can perform tasks autonomously, including opening browsers, filling forms, and negotiating on users' behalf. The launch aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision of AI superintelligence for everyone. He outlined this vision last month in an essay describing a future where personal agents work around the clock to improve users' relationships, health, careers, and finances.

Meta faces $70M fine as Australia proposes algorithm choice for social feeds

Meta Platforms faces a new regulatory challenge as Australia unveiled its draft Digital Duty of Care framework. The proposal, called "My Feed, My Way", would require social platforms to explain how their recommendation algorithms work and offer users a feed showing only accounts they follow. Violations could result in penalties of A$109.2 million (roughly $79 million). The plan still requires consultation before reaching Parliament. Meta reported $60.80 billion in second-quarter revenue, driven by a 14% increase in ad impressions and a 12% rise in average ad prices. The maximum fine represents only about 0.13% of Meta's quarterly revenue. Meta shares slipped slightly during early trading on Tuesday following the announcement.

Tech giants' $1.1T AI spending spree raises cash-flow concerns as investment outpaces returns

Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet and Oracle — collectively dubbed the "Hyper 5" — have spent $1.1 trillion on capital expenditures over the past five years to build AI infrastructure, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Analyst estimates project another $5.3 trillion in spending through 2030. The investment surge is putting pressure on free cash flow. Amazon's free cash flow fell to negative $7.6 billion over the 12 months ended 30 June, from positive $18.2 billion a year earlier. Meta's second-quarter free cash flow dropped 91% to $784 million. S&P Global warns the key risk is companies transitioning from cash to debt-funded investment before returns validate the spending. However, the tech giants remain highly profitable, distinguishing this cycle from the dot-com boom.

Meta's $10B+ Texas data center hits political resistance over grid, incentives

Meta Platforms' planned data centre in El Paso, Texas, is facing political resistance from both parties despite its more than $10 billion price tag. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is pushing for tougher restrictions, fewer incentives and tighter limits on rural development. The state has approved no additional grid hookups since an August audit. The project will require one gigawatt of computing capacity, with the first phase expected online in 2028. Construction could support over 4,000 jobs at peak, followed by approximately 300 permanent positions. The investment represents at least 7.3% of Meta's $137.5 billion annual capital-expenditure midpoint. Last quarter, the company spent $31.08 billion on capital expenditures whilst generating only $784 million in free cash flow.

Meta to release open weights Muse Spark model 'soon' as v1.3 goes live

Meta will release an open weights version of its AI model Muse Spark "soon", CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced. Muse Spark 1.3 is now available on Meta's API service and Muse Code CLI. The updated model features improved performance in long-duration tasks and better judgement about its capabilities. Meta says it now asks clarifying questions when prompts are ambiguous and seeks user assistance when stuck, reducing the tokens needed to complete tasks. According to independent benchmarking by Artificial Analysis, Muse Spark 1.3 delivers performance comparable to OpenAI's GPT 5.6 Sol and Anthropic's Claude Opus 5. The model shows a four-point improvement in overall intelligence compared to version 1.2. Meta offers a contributor tier with discounted pricing starting at $0.002 per million cached input tokens.
