Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • Reliable transportation to and from Emery High School, Canyon View Middle School, and San Rafael Middle School is required.
  • The ability to work 15 hours per week and follow scheduled hours and appointments is required.
  • The ability to address diverse learners, work independently, handle confidential information including FERPA, and follow GEAR UP, school, district, and university policies is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook email, Google Calendar, and Mac and/or PC platforms is required.
  • Successful completion of a background check is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide academic, career, and college advising to GEAR UP students and their families or guardians individually and in groups.
  • Interact with school administrators, teachers, students, and families or guardians to plan and facilitate GEAR UP workshops and activities.
  • Recruit students into the GEAR UP program in collaboration with the Region 9 GEAR UP Director.
  • Travel regularly among Emery High School, Canyon View Middle School, and San Rafael Middle School to serve high- and middle-school students.
  • Travel to the Region 9 GEAR UP home office at Utah State University Eastern for quarterly staff meetings and an annual retreat in August.
  • Work occasional evenings for parent-teacher conferences, professional development opportunities, graduation celebrations, and other special events.
  • Assist students with homework, ACT and SAT preparation, academic activities, scholarships, financial aid including FAFSA, college applications, college-preparatory activities, rigorous coursework advancement, and other GEAR UP functions.
  • Design and conduct workshops on college and career readiness, academic skills, life skills, and other GEAR UP topics.
  • Attend GEAR UP Region 9 special events and help create a post-secondary education-attending culture among students and families or guardians.
  • Identify supports and barriers affecting students’ completion of high school and attendance at a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Serve as an advisor and positive role model for GEAR UP students.
  • Identify and encourage student participation in GEAR UP.
  • Meet regularly with students and families or guardians in person, in small groups, or in classrooms.
  • Communicate with students and families or guardians by phone, text, or email.
  • Refer students and families or guardians to appropriate school or community organizations based on their needs.
  • Promote GEAR UP programs and activities, contribute to GEAR UP social media content and the monthly newsletter, participate in training, staff meetings, campus visits, activities, and events, and submit required paperwork by GEAR UP deadlines.
  • Report disclosures of sexual harassment or sexual violence as a Title IX Responsible Employee.
  • Report suspected child abuse or neglect as required by Utah law.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree or certificate of completion from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution or regionally accredited vocational or trade school is preferred.
  • Current or previous experience with a GEAR UP program is preferred.
  • Previous experience mentoring or working with high school and middle school students is preferred.
  • Knowledge of college or university admissions, financial aid and scholarship programs, and degree requirements is preferred.
