Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited LPN nursing program.
  • Current licensure by the South Carolina Board of Nursing at the Licensed Practical Nurse level.
  • One year of clinical experience working in a patient care environment, especially with oncology patients.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • Knowledge of computer systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form and maintain organizational skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret business, safety, clinical, and technical materials and regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, correspondence, or manuals.
  • Ability to present information and respond to questions from patients, families, employees, and medical staff.
  • Ability to work with complex mathematical concepts related to probability and statistical inferences and apply them to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret verbal, nonverbal, and written instructions.
  • Ability to meet the physical, visual, and sensory requirements of the position, including lifting and exerting energy as specified.
Responsibilities
  • Provide patient- and family-centered care as a partner and adviser while respecting culture, values, individual needs, health goals, and treatment preferences.
  • Apply critical reasoning and clinical judgment to expedite appropriate care and treatment, including for complex or potentially life-threatening conditions.
  • Assist medical staff with patient preparation, examinations, and procedures.
  • Interview and screen patients to obtain personal data and chief complaints.
  • Record patient information, vital signs, findings, and care provided accurately in the medical record.
  • Perform telephone and in-person screenings.
  • Prioritize and document incoming patient phone calls regarding medications and medical conditions and review them with providers as needed for orders or changes.
  • Clean and stock examination rooms and supply areas.
  • Serve as a working clinical support nurse for physicians and cancer center patients.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement activities.
  • Enter patient laboratory, X-ray, and ancillary order data as directed by physicians or nurse practitioners.
  • Review computer records and charts before appointments to ensure office notes, ancillary reports, pathology reports, and other documentation are correct.
  • Triage patient concerns by telephone.
  • Escort patients to examination rooms and prepare them for physicians as needed.
  • Schedule ancillary services as necessary.
  • Review routing information before and after patient check-out to ensure information and documentation are accurate and complete.
  • Phone in prescriptions as directed by physicians or the clinical care coordinator.
  • Administer injections when necessary.
  • Educate and instruct patients and distribute medical education materials.
  • Assist in other areas and perform related duties as assigned.
