About the Team

Our Communications team includes PR/Media Relations, Employee Communications, Events, Design, and other external-facing functions. This team’s ethos is to support OpenAI’s mission and goals by clearly and authentically explaining our technology, values, and approach to safely building powerful AI.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced communications professional to join our small, high-impact team to lead research communications. 

This person will be responsible for the development and implementation of external communication strategies aimed at informing the press, stakeholders, and the general public about our scientific research. This will involve collaborating closely with various teams at OpenAI to advance initiatives and shape narratives that align with the organization’s goals. The role will report directly to the Product and Research Communications Lead.

The ideal candidate should bring a strong mix of strategic and tactical comms experience. Ability to move fast and collaboratively on complex issues in a changing environment is critical. Passion for science, new technology, and storytelling is key.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

• Work closely with research teams and develop strategies to amplify the impact of our research. 

• Forge deep relationships with relevant media and manage inbound requests regarding internal and external research

• Partner cross-functionally with teams including research, product, global affairs and other teams at OpenAI

• Provide counsel and support to team members across the organization

• Anticipate comms risks and establish risk mitigation strategies 

We’re looking for a blend of qualifications, including:

• Over 12 years of experience in professional communications and media relations.

• Expertise in science and AI research communications with a proven record in scientific campaigns.

• Ability to simplify complex research into clear, engaging content for both experts and the public.

• Demonstrated success in forging strong relationships and collaborating with the press, executives, and other key stakeholders.
