About the company

United Parcel Service picks up packages from businesses and households and delivers them by truck and plane to addresses around the world. Beyond small parcels, it moves heavy freight, clears imported goods through customs, and runs warehouses and distribution for other companies. Each package is scanned as it passes through local centers and regional sorting hubs, which lets senders and recipients track it from pickup to doorstep. Customers pay shipping rates set by package weight, size, distance, and speed, while large shippers negotiate their own contract rates. UPS was founded in 1907 in Seattle as a messenger service and is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

What believers are saying

  • The Amazon cutback is finished: UPS completed it and raised 2026 revenue guidance to $91.2 billion in July 2026.
  • Medical shipping is expanding: UPS closed its $1.6 billion purchase of Canadian cold-chain carrier Andlauer in November 2025.
  • Driving jobs pay well: full-time UPS drivers' average top rate reaches $49 an hour before the contract ends in 2028.

What critics are saying

  • Operations jobs are shrinking: in January 2026, UPS planned up to 30,000 role cuts for the year, mostly through attrition.
  • The network keeps contracting: in January 2026, UPS slated 24 more building closures after shutting 93 in 2025.
  • Union relations are tense: in January 2026, Teamsters chief Sean O'Brien attacked UPS's renewed driver buyout offer.

What makes United Parcel Service unique

  • Union rules shape the job: about 340,000 UPS Teamsters work under North America's largest private-sector labor contract.
  • Its own air hub sets the pace: Louisville's Worldport sorts about 400,000 packages an hour with over 7,000 workers.
  • Healthcare is its chosen growth lane: UPS set a goal of $20 billion in health care logistics revenue by 2026.

UPS beats PepsiCo on 10-year dividends: $11,414 vs $6,610 on $10,000 invested

UPS would pay income investors more than PepsiCo over the next 10 years, according to an analysis by TIKR. At today's yields and each company's 2020–2025 dividend growth rate, $10,000 in UPS pays about $11,414 in dividends over the decade, against about $6,610 for PepsiCo. UPS yields 7.1% at $92.28 a share, while PepsiCo yields 4.8%. UPS's dividend grew 10.2% a year from fiscal 2020 to fiscal 2025, and PepsiCo's grew 6.9%. Both payouts are stretched. UPS paid out 99% of its trailing free cash flow, and PepsiCo paid out 84%. Even with a flat dividend of $6.56 a share, $10,000 in UPS pays $7,100 over 10 years, still above PepsiCo. A UPS dividend cut would change that, so investors should watch its free cash flow against the roughly $5.4 billion in dividends planned for 2026.

UPS raises 2026 outlook as SMB volume hits record 35.1% and RFID cuts scanning costs

UPS raised its full-year outlook after its third-quarter 2026 earnings call on October 27, 2026. Operating margins grew as higher-margin commercial business replaced lower-margin package volume. Small and medium-sized businesses lifted average daily volume by 3.7% year-over-year and made up a record 35.1% of US volume. Revenue per piece rose 6.1%, outpacing cost per piece for the second straight quarter and adding 60 basis points to operating margin. Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is cutting manual package scans. Automated hubs now handle nearly 70% of holiday volume, reducing vehicle leases and staffing needs. Chief executive officer Carol Tomé said the strategy is "coming to life" as Amazon volume continues to decline.

UPS and MP Materials: two industrial stocks built to withstand an AI bubble burst

Two industrial stocks could hold up even if the AI bubble bursts, according to The Motley Fool's Reuben Gregg Brewer: United Parcel Service (UPS) and MP Materials. UPS is slimming down, investing in technology and exiting low-margin businesses. Third-quarter 2026 revenues rose 6.7% year over year, and it raised its full-year guidance for revenues, earnings, and free cash flow. The stock yields 6%. MP Materials is building a rare-earth metals business outside China, the dominant global player. Its second-quarter 2026 revenues grew nearly 90% as output from its new mine fed its processing facilities. Brewer calls MP Materials a high-risk investment, suited to aggressive investors.

Q3 earnings call US consumers "resilient", but Whirlpool shows strain as sales fall 8%

Early third-quarter earnings suggest US consumers are still spending, though not every company is benefiting. "Resilient" was the word many executives used this week, despite inflation, high interest rates and tension between the US and Iran. Royal Caribbean beat earnings expectations, with guests served up 9% to 2.7 million. Its shares rose over 8% on Tuesday. UPS beat expectations on earnings and revenue, with US revenue up 4.5% to $14.86 billion, and raised its full-year revenue forecast to about $92.6 billion from $91.2 billion. Coca-Cola beat expectations and lifted its full-year earnings growth forecast to at least 11%. Sherwin-Williams' net sales rose 7.9%, but it expects muted demand into 2027. Whirlpool missed on both revenue and earnings, and its North America net sales fell more than 8%.
