Legacy Health, UnitedHealthcare reach deal to continue access to services.

Legacy Health, UnitedHealthcare reach deal to continue access to services. By Kimberly Cortez, The Columbian, Vancouver, Wash. The Tribune Content Agency October 1, 2026 6:08 PM Gift Article Clark County residents with UnitedHealthcare health insurance will continue to access Legacy Health services after the two organizations reached a new agreement Wednesday just hours before their previous contract was set to expire. The new contract became effective Oct. 1. About 30,000 residents in Southwest Washington were at risk of losing in-network rates and benefits to Legacy Health hospitals, clinics, urgent cares and providers. Legacy Health said it will be working with patients insured by UnitedHealthcare to minimize any disruption to care, including helping patients reschedule appointments or procedures that may have been delayed. Before the new contract, Legacy Health and UnitedHealthcare were at odds over how much the insurer would pay for the rising cost of care. Since 2021, Legacy's operating expenses have risen 50 percent due to inflation and higher labor and supply costs, outpacing UnitedHealthcare's reimbursement growth by 78 percent, according to the nonprofit health system's website. In November, Legacy closed all Washington Legacy-GoHealth Urgent Care clinics - including locations in Camas, Cascade Park, Hazel Dell and Salmon Creek - due to these financial challenges. While the new contract recognizes increased operating costs, it doesn't completely close the financial gap, according to Legacy. The new reimbursement rates were not disclosed by either organization. "We know this process has been stressful for our patients with UnitedHealthcare coverage, and we are pleased to share that we have reached an agreement," said Merrin Permut, Legacy Health vice president and chief population health officer. This isn't the first time Legacy and an insurance company have struggled to reach an agreement on a new contract. In April, Regence health insurance's network no longer included Legacy Health providers after the two organizations failed to reach an agreement before their previous contract expired. About 9,300 Clark County residents with Regence insurance were affected by the change. The two organizations were able to reach an agreement on a new contract about a month after the previous one expired. 'Nature is a familiar place for all of us': Therapeutic garden brings benefits to Vancouver Veterans Affairs campus.

'Nature is a familiar place for all of us': Therapeutic garden brings benefits to Vancouver Veterans Affairs campus. Vibrant habitat also supports local bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. Published: June 9, 2026, 6:06am Sponsored advertisement A new garden on the Vancouver Veterans Affairs campus offers therapeutic benefits to patients at the medical center while creating a vibrant habitat that supports local bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. The garden was unveiled to veterans, caregivers and families on May 22 through a collaboration among VA FARMS, the Vancouver Bee Project and Legacy Health's therapeutic garden program. By using horticulture as a therapeutic medium, the garden helps veterans meet specific treatment goals and improve health outcomes, said Meghan Mckiernan, Legacy's therapeutic garden program manager. "Nature is a familiar place for all of us," Mckiernan said. "You see the cognitive shift, and as someone who works in patient care, it's just a very profound thing to witness that part of a patient's healing journey." Children enrolled in Legacy Health's therapeutic garden program worked with Mckiernan to curate a list of plants suitable for the VA FARMS space. Community organizations such as the Elks and Nature Play Designs assisted in procuring plants for this project. "It just really kind highlighted how wide-reaching nature and horticulture can be in our community," Mckiernan said. She hopes to bring more programming to veterans in partnership with fellow VA therapeutic garden coordinator Mandi Atkinson, whose efforts were instrumental in making the collaboration possible. Healthcare settings are increasingly adding therapeutic gardens due to the myriad health benefits correlated with nature and green spaces, according to the American Horticultural Therapy Association. Sponsored advertisement For example, multiple studies show higher levels of exposure to green space were associated with significantly lower levels of symptoms for depression, anxiety and stress. Patients aren't the only ones benefiting from quiet time in nature. Nurses and medical professionals also significantly benefit from proximity to a green space, which is why every Legacy hospital has a therapeutic garden, Mckiernan said. At Legacy Salmon Creek, the public can visit the therapeutic garden on the third floor near the cafeteria at any time of the day. "For our employees typically working long shifts inside, being able to take a break out in the garden is really important as an opportunity to just reconnect with nature and get some fresh air before they go back into a really stressful, busy environment," Mckiernan said.
