About the Job

Requirements

  • Have a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics, or a closely related technical field.
  • Have at least 2 years of relevant technical experience in one or more of the following areas: estimation methods (Extended Kalman, Unscented, and/or Particle Filters), covariance analysis, inertial navigation, flight dynamics, control law design, or guidance/path planning.
  • Have an interest and willingness to work on missile systems.
  • Have experience in MATLAB or C++, and be willing to learn Simulink.
  • Be willing and able to support occasional travel of less than 10% for Sponsor meetings.
  • Be able to obtain an interim Secret-level security clearance by the start date and ultimately obtain a Top Secret-level clearance; eligibility requires U.S. citizenship.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct GN&C subsystem trade studies, designs, and analyses for next-generation missile systems, including 6-DOF model development and integration, high-fidelity navigation optimal-estimation algorithm design primarily using Kalman filters, performance prediction, and high- and low-fidelity sensor modeling.
  • Assess the performance of existing missile GN&C subsystems, including pre-flight performance prediction using 6-DOF models and covariance analysis, post-flight evaluation of sensor telemetry, and development, implementation, and assessment of potential algorithm improvements.
  • Design, develop, integrate, test, and use software to conduct technical analyses that inform APL’s technical opinions and/or generate data products.
  • Present work to internal audiences, sponsors, and external organizations at working groups, post-flight briefings, and program reviews.

About the Company

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

Not-for-profit UARC delivering national security research

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a not-for-profit university-affiliated research center that provides solutions to complex national security and scientific challenges through technical expertise, prototyping, research and development, and analysis. It uses engineering, simulations, and studies to design prototypes and deliver analyses that support government and partner organizations. Unlike many commercial firms, APL operates as a non-profit affiliated with Johns Hopkins and focuses on mission-oriented research rather than selling finished products. Its goal is to provide practical, thoroughly tested solutions to public-sector customers by performing research, developing prototypes, and offering expert analysis.
