Microsoft Just Built An Ai That Designs Materials For The Future. Here’S How It Works.

Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More. Microsoft Research has introduced a powerful new AI system today that generates novel materials with specific desired properties, potentially accelerating the development of better batteries, more efficient solar cells and other critical technologies. The system, called MatterGen, represents a fundamental shift in how scientists discover new materials. Rather than screening millions of existing compounds — the traditional approach that can take years — MatterGen directly generates novel materials based on desired characteristics, similar to how AI image generators create pictures from text descriptions.“Generative models provide a new paradigm for materials design by directly generating entirely novel materials given desired property constraints,” said Tian Xie, principal research manager at Microsoft Research and lead author of the study published today in Nature. “This represents a major advancement towards creating a universal generative model for materials design.”. Apple Disables Ai-Generated News Summaries Amid Complaints Of Made-Up Info

Apple reportedly disabled artificial intelligence-generated news summaries on the beta version of a new iOS operating system. The company did so after earlier updates failed to stop the Apple Intelligence-powered feature from incorrectly summarizing or simply making up information, The Washington Post reported Friday (Jan. 17).Some news organizations asked Apple to do something about the feature after it botched summaries of their news articles while still attributing the articles to them, according to the report. The latest update, iOS 18.3, will soon be distributed to all iPhones that support Apple Intelligence, the report said.Apple aims to improve the news feature and bring it back in a future update, per the report. It was reported in November that Apple was facing mounting criticism over the inaccurate and misleading headline summaries produced by its AI-driven news summary feature. The BBC flagged the issue in December when a news alert summary that looked to come from the BBC app wrongly reported that Luigi Mangione, who is charged with killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, had shot himself. In another instance, Apple’s news summary said Luke Littler had won the PDC World Darts Championship before the contest even began.Other publications experienced similar hallucinations from Apple’s AI.Vincent Berthier, head of the technology and journalism desk at Reporters Without Borders (RSF in French), called on Apple to remove the feature from its iPhones.“The automated production of false information attributed to a media outlet is a blow to the outlet’s credibility and a danger to the public’s right to reliable information on current affairs,” Berthier wrote on the group’s website.AI hallucinations, in which AI systems generate plausible but inaccurate information, present a vexing problem for businesses, PYMNTS reported in June. The risks posed by these fabricated outputs are coming into sharp focus as companies increasingly rely on AI to drive decision-making.In October, OpenAI’s Whisper transcription software was caught adding fabricated text to conversations, including potentially harmful content that speakers never uttered. On Tuesday (Jan. 14), it was reported that the issue of hallucinations is one of the roadblocks Amazon has run into during its planned revamp of Alexa into a smarter voice assistant with generative AI at its core. For all PYMNTS AI coverage, subscribe to the daily AI Newsletter

This Week In Ai: Trump Repeals Biden Ai Rules But Launches Stargate

As expected, President Donal Trump this week signed an executive order rolling back former President Joe Biden’s 2023 artificial intelligence (AI) rules, which had been the country’s most comprehensive set of policies overseeing its advances. Biden ordered the federal government to scrutinize powerful AI models before they are released to the public, create chief AI officers at federal agencies and develop AI-related security guidelines to enhance cybersecurity, among other stipulations. However, Trump thus far has left Biden’s other AI-related orders unchanged. He did not revise Biden’s policy restricting exports of advanced AI chips — principally affecting Nvidia’s chips — to nations like China that could use them to beef up its own military’s technical prowess. In his last days in office, Biden expanded his chip export controls, essentially carving out the haves and have nots among more than 120 countries

‘I’M Good For My $80 Billion’: What Microsoft Ceo Satya Nadella Really Meant By His Stargate Zinger

VIDEO. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had the quote of the week in response to a question from CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin about Elon Musk questioning the ability of the new Stargate Project‘s financial backers to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure.“Look, all I know is, I’m good for my $80 billion,” Nadella said with a sly grin and a chuckle during an interview from the World Economic Forum in Davos. As the zinger has circulated on social media, this has been misconstrued by some as Nadella saying that Microsoft is putting $80 billion into the Stargate, chipping in along with Softbank, Oracle, OpenAI, and other equity partners. This is not correct. Microsoft is a tech partner in Stargate but not one of the major financial backers.Instead, Nadella was referring to Microsoft’s own AI data center buildout — which the company previously said would total about $80 billion this fiscal year. Given this prior context, that was my read on what Nadella said, and I was able to confirm this with someone who has direct knowledge of the situation. In part, it’s a case of a sound bite being taken out of context

Openai: Extending Model ‘Thinking Time’ Helps Combat Emerging Cyber Vulnerabilities

Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More. Typically, developers focus on reducing inference time — the period between when AI receives a prompt and provides an answer — to get at faster insights. But when it comes to adversarial robustness, OpenAI researchers say: Not so fast. They propose that increasing the amount of time a model has to “think” — inference time compute — can help build up defenses against adversarial attacks. The company used its own o1-preview and o1-mini models to test this theory, launching a variety of static and adaptive attack methods — image-based manipulations, intentionally providing incorrect answers to math problems, and overwhelming models with information (“many-shot jailbreaking”). They then measured the probability of attack success based on the amount of computation the model used at inference. “We see that in many cases, this probability decays — often to near zero — as the inference-time compute grows,” the researchers write in a blog post. “Our claim is not that these particular models are unbreakable — we know they are — but that scaling inference-time compute yields improved robustness for a variety of settings and attacks.”From simple Q/A to complex mathLarge language models (LLMs) are becoming ever more sophisticated and autonomous — in some cases essentially taking over computers for humans to browse the web, execute code, make appointments and perform other tasks autonomously — and as they do, their attack surface becomes wider and every more exposed. Yet adversarial robustness continues to be a stubborn problem, with progress in solving it still limited, the OpenAI researchers point out — even as it is increasingly critical as models take on more actions with real-world impacts. “Ensuring that agentic models function reliably when browsing the web, sending emails or uploading code to repositories can be seen as analogous to ensuring that self-driving cars drive without accidents,” they write in a new research paper

Chatgpt Gets A Personal Assistant Upgrade—If You'Re Willing To Pay $200 A Month

Decrypt’s Art, Fashion, and Entertainment Hub. Discover SCENEOn Thursday, OpenAI unveiled a new feature, dubbed Operator, that lets ChatGPT take control of a virtual browser to perform real-world tasks like ordering food or booking flights. But so far, it’s aimed at rich people. The tool, currently available only to Pro subscribers ($200/month) in the U.S., marks the company's first venture into autonomous web browsing. It highlights the emergence of a tiered financial system, where those who pay more gain access to the best AI features. At the same time, lower-paying users are limited to less capable models with restricted functionality—arguably not that democratic. The system works through operator.chatgpt.com, where users can ask ChatGPT to handle various online chores. There have been some attempts to do similar things in the past, from the OpenAI plugin store to the promise of Large Action Models popularized by Rabbit. Still, their reliance on APIs made them inconvenient and challenging to set up.What makes this different is how it works. Instead of relying on APIs as its predecessors, Operator controls a cloud-based browser, clicking buttons and filling forms just like a human would.Every time Operator makes a move, it snaps a screenshot to show you what it's doing. For example, if you need to book a ticket to a game, the AI will open up its own browser, go to a specific site, look for the game in question, and find the best options before asking you to confirm the payment. It will also walk you through its decision-making process with visual proof
