About the job

Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
  • At least 8 years of hands-on experience designing and deploying large-scale optimization, control systems, or machine learning models in production environments.
  • A deep mathematical foundation in probability, convex and stochastic optimization, and control theory, including feedback control or model predictive control.
  • Expertise in production programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, SQL, or Spark, with experience in low-latency or distributed data architectures.
  • Active hands-on experience with AI pair-programming and developer automation tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or agentic orchestration frameworks.
  • Ability to evaluate, refine, and validate AI-generated research artifacts and code to ensure safety, accuracy, and performance.
  • A continuous-experimentation mindset, using AI tools to automate repetitive engineering and diagnostic tasks.
  • Ability to translate complex mathematical concepts into clear executive strategy.
Responsibilities
  • Lead research, architectural design, and production deployment of large-scale algorithms for budget pacing, bid optimization, and marketplace supply-and-demand balancing.
  • Architect and lead implementation of agentic AI workflows using AI coding agents, automated experiment orchestration, and agent-driven validation to accelerate research-to-production iteration.
  • Provide technical strategy and long-term vision for the DSP optimization ecosystem in alignment with business and engineering leadership.
  • Apply control theory, convex and stochastic optimization, and machine learning to solve complex real-time marketplace dynamics under signal uncertainty.
  • Direct AI-assisted code refactoring, automated test-suite generation, and LLM-driven research synthesis using tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT.
  • Own multi-quarter research initiatives from mathematical formulation through production rollout, establishing rigorous metrics and evaluation frameworks.
  • Partner with engineering and product management teams to ensure algorithmic designs execute at scale.
  • Mentor senior scientists and engineers, set technical excellence standards, and foster an AI-forward research culture.
  • Communicate technical strategy, experimental results, and architectural choices to executive and cross-functional partners.
  • Deliver measurable efficiency gains in budget delivery and bid efficiency by deploying refreshed control models built through AI-augmented development loops.
  • Establish standardized agentic development frameworks across the optimization research organization.
  • Serve as the technical lead for DSP optimization and align research roadmaps with long-term business growth.
  • Adhere to Yahoo policies, exercise sound judgment, work effectively, safely, and inclusively with others, meet expectations for trustworthiness, and safeguard business operations and brand integrity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior research or production experience in computational advertising, real-time bidding auctions, or dual-sided marketplace design.
  • A portfolio of peer-reviewed publications or patents in computational advertising, control theory, or applied optimization.
  • Experience leading system-level re-architectures using agentic workflows or automated research pipelines.
  • Familiarity with high-throughput, low-latency distributed computing frameworks.

Yahoo raises $1.6B with 11% bond yield as Apollo-backed firm refinances debt

Yahoo has raised $1.6 billion in high-yield financing to refinance debt from Apollo Global Management's acquisition of the company. The deal comprises a $700 million term loan B priced at 6.5 percentage points over the US benchmark and $900 million in junk bonds due in 2031 at an 11% yield. The 11% yield represents one of the highest-yielding corporate debt offerings this year, significantly above the 7.2% average for existing B-rated bonds. The refinancing replaces loans from Apollo's 2021 $5 billion buyout of Yahoo from Verizon Communications, which were priced more favourably at 5.5 percentage points over benchmark. Moody's Ratings noted concerns about Yahoo's reliance on desktop traffic and competition from larger players in search advertising, though the deal attracted strong investor interest amid broader high-yield issuance.

Alibaba vs. The World

Back in 2010 and 2011, Alibaba Group founder and executive chairman and then–chief executive Jack Ma and executive vice chairman Joseph Tsai were under pressure. Executives at Yahoo!, which owned a 40 percent stake in the Chinese e-commerce giant, were under the gun from their own investors to cut corporate debt and extract value from their prized asset, and they wanted to sell down their stake. The problem: The Alibaba executives were struggling to find buyers.
