About the job

Requirements
  • Candidates must have graduated from a college or university program in 2026 (Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter).
  • Candidates must have a degree in Animation, Art, Game Art, Technical Art, Game Design, Game Development, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Candidates must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week, during core business hours for the program duration, including the first week onsite at the studio in San Carlos, California for onboarding.
  • Candidates must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Candidates must submit a complete application including a resume, cover letter, and a portfolio or GitHub link.
  • Candidates should have foundational hands-on experience with Unreal Engine and Blueprint scripting, demonstrated through a small playable project, prototype, or coursework, and interest in learning and thoughtfully applying game development tools, systems, and workflows.
  • Portfolio examples should show gameplay logic or systems the candidate helped build, such as a character ability, movement mechanic, interaction, encounter, or simple progression system, and explain the candidate's contribution, how the logic works, and how they investigated a problem or improved the result.
  • Portfolio examples should include a playable gameplay or level prototype demonstrating experimentation, attention to player experience, and iteration based on testing or feedback; personal, classroom, and game jam projects are welcome.
  • Candidates should have industry involvement outside classroom curriculum, such as game jams, personal projects, or contributions to group projects.
  • Candidates should have exposure to industry-standard development software tools and engines.
  • Candidates should be willing to tackle challenges, learn from feedback, and adapt to new tools or workflows.
  • Candidates should be able to communicate ideas and put feedback into action.
Responsibilities
  • Learn and apply development workflows in Unreal Engine using Blueprint scripting, rapid prototyping, and playtesting to turn design ideas into working gameplay; review, test, and refine work with guidance from a design mentor.
  • Help improve existing combat and traversal mechanics by reproducing issues, debugging Blueprint logic, tuning gameplay values, and building small test spaces to evaluate movement distances, timing, readability, and game feel.
  • Prototype clearly scoped gameplay features with guidance from project design leadership. Potential assignments include progression and upgrade systems, new movement abilities, systemic encounters, or a focused boss encounter; contribute ideas and iterate on a small playable prototype through regular feedback.
  • Help develop and document repeatable workflows for designing, building, and testing gameplay and levels; explore Unreal Engine procedural content generation tools, create reusable test setups, and record what works so others can build on the experiments.
Desired Qualifications
  • Candidates may show gameplay logic or systems they helped build, such as a character ability, movement mechanic, interaction, encounter, or simple progression system, in their portfolio.
  • Candidates may show a playable gameplay or level prototype demonstrating experimentation, attention to player experience, and iteration based on testing or feedback; personal, classroom, and game jam projects are welcome.
  • Industry involvement outside classroom curriculum, including game jams, personal projects, or contributions to group projects, is a distinguishing factor.
  • Exposure to industry-standard development software tools and engines is a distinguishing factor.

Crystal Dynamics lays off 20 staff in fourth round of cuts in under a year

Crystal Dynamics has announced its fourth round of layoffs in under a year, cutting 20 employees despite assuring fans that development of upcoming Tomb Raider titles remains on track. The studio initially laid off 17 employees a year ago whilst working on Perfect Dark and an unnamed Tomb Raider project. Microsoft's cancellation of the Perfect Dark reboot in July triggered subsequent layoff rounds in August and November, occurring just weeks before Crystal Dynamics announced Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Legacy of Atlantis. In a LinkedIn post, the studio stated the cuts were necessary as projects enter new development phases, though it remains "fully committed" to the announced Tomb Raider titles. The company said it strives to transition staff into new roles when possible, but these departures were unavoidable.
