About the job

Requirements
  • A deep background in machine learning, with strong fundamentals in inference serving systems, key-value cache design, or latency-sensitive model deployment.
  • A track record of rigorous machine learning research demonstrated through publications, strong open-source contributions, or equivalent depth.
  • Extensive experience in at least one directly relevant area: continual learning, memory architectures, test-time training, parameter-efficient fine-tuning, context compression, retrieval, synthetic data, distillation, or agents.
  • Comfort working across the stack, understanding both the research question and the system it runs on.
  • Strong technical communication, including explaining complex ideas simply and engaging in high-bandwidth technical discussions.
Responsibilities
  • Design experiments, develop new recipes, build evaluations, and shape the product used by leading technology and artificial intelligence companies.
  • Design and evaluate methods for encoding large, heterogeneous document corpora into compact parametric memory, including low-rank adaptation and adapter-based representations, prefix tuning, and state-space methods.
  • Understand what makes synthetic training data generalize and develop self-study pipelines that allow models to reflect on and consolidate new context.
  • Develop continual learning algorithms addressing catastrophic forgetting, sequential updates, knowledge conflicts, and tradeoffs between in-weights memory and agentic retrieval.
  • Explore reinforcement learning methods that let models improve from interaction and feedback in real deployment settings.
  • Study empirically how model capacity, data scale, and compute interact, and develop scaling laws that inform the product roadmap.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience bridging research and product, including shipping things that real users interact with.
  • Familiarity with large language model training infrastructure.

About the company

Engram Lab builds AI systems that learn from a user's context to understand their work. Its core product is a learned memory layer that separates organizational knowledge from model reasoning so enterprise AI workloads don’t reprocess full context for every query. The company starts from strong pre-trained models and trains on the customer’s context, making the models token-efficient and able to draw connections across documents, workflows, and institutional knowledge. Its goal is to continually absorb data with a single training algorithm, aiming to retrain hourly (and eventually every minute) to reduce inference costs and improve personalization for large enterprise LLM workloads.

What believers are saying

  • June 2026, Engram raised $98 million from Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins, and General Catalyst.
  • Microsoft committed GPU capacity across Dapple and Azure for Engram training.
  • Notion reported order-of-magnitude token savings using Engram inside custom agents.

What critics are saying

  • Engram had no public product in June 2026, so adoption depends on pilots.
  • Microsoft, Notion, and Harvey build internal alternatives, collapsing Engram's distribution by 2027.
  • Hourly and minute-level retraining demands unsolved scaling; failure kills the thesis.

What makes Engram Lab unique

  • June 2026, Engram's learned memory layer compresses organizational context into reusable model memory.
  • Microsoft 365, Notion, and Harvey already test Engram across enterprise workflows.
  • The 13-person research team includes Stanford's Chris Ré and memory specialist Natalie Biderman.
