Requirements
  • A J.D. and a minimum of five years of successful experience in the practice of law.
  • Extensive knowledge of career-related issues particular to the practice of law and extensive experience with or in the legal market.
  • Ability to provide high-level, tailored counseling; previous career counseling experience is preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to collaborate with students, faculty, alumni, professional colleagues, and members of the university community.
  • Ability and interest in actively networking with alumni and potential employers, including at evening and weekend events.
  • Strong leadership and management skills to help lead the Office of Career Services team and serve as a role model for students and alumni.
  • Ability to independently generate new ideas for career programs and resources and efficiently plan and organize events, workshops, and other projects.
  • Experience working with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff, with a strong equity lens, cultural humility, and the ability to work effectively in a diverse context.
  • Excellent grammar, writing, and editing skills to proofread and edit application materials and draft correspondence and resource materials.
  • Excellent presentation and verbal skills to articulate concepts in counseling sessions and presentations.
  • Ability to counsel students in person, virtually via Zoom, and over the phone.
  • Ability to execute office objectives and assess and optimize office processes and procedures.
  • Organizational skills to handle multiple long-term and short-term projects and competing priorities.
  • Extensive computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google/G Suite applications.
  • Experience working with online databases.
  • Commitment to the vision, mission, and values of the University of San Francisco and the School of Law.
  • Ability to work on site at least three days per week.
Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized career counseling services to current J.D., LL.M., and Master's students and recent graduates.
  • Counsel assigned students, recent graduates, and alumni on career options, professional development, networking, job-search strategies, and interviewing skills.
  • Review resumes, cover letters, and supporting job-application materials.
  • Enter counseling notes and track student and recent graduate progress in an online career database.
  • Ensure data collection and assessment for American Bar Association and National Association for Law Placement reporting and metrics.
  • Create and implement targeted short-term and long-term programming each semester.
  • Support on-campus recruiting by sourcing employers and preparing students for interviews.
  • Implement mock-interview programs.
  • Create and implement career-related presentations, workshops, and programs.
  • Assess and recruit speakers and help develop multimedia content on legal career-development topics.
  • Develop and coordinate relationships with student affinity groups.
  • Collaborate with law-school departments, university departments, and peer institutions on co-sponsored events.
  • Plan and staff events and networking receptions with law firms, public-sector agencies, public-interest organizations, and other employers.
  • Assist with Public Interest/Public Service Day, employer recruiting events, and job fairs.
  • Ensure programming aligns with the office's strategic goals.
  • Participate in developing and implementing Office of Career Services policies, planning, and metrics.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of support staff and student assistants.
  • Participate in team meetings concerning strategic goals, metrics, assessment, and programming.
  • Collect and develop student materials and resources.
  • Develop, edit, and update career-services materials.
  • Work with the Office of Career Services team to ensure recent graduates complete and submit job surveys.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend career-related resources for acquisition.
  • Manage and update the Office of Career Services webpage and social-media presence with the law school's communications partner.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with law faculty, administrators, alumni practitioners, and career-services professionals.
  • Represent the Office of Career Services at conferences, meetings, and events associated with legal, educational, and career organizations.
  • Represent the Office of Career Services and the School of Law at admissions and alumni events.
  • Develop employment, mentorship, and networking opportunities for students and alumni through employer and alumni relationships.
  • Secure new on-campus recruiting employers and leverage alumni volunteers and mentors.
  • Assist in developing marketing and promotional strategies and campaigns.
  • Maintain employer relationships and cultivate and expand employment opportunities for students and graduates.
  • Work regular evening hours and occasional weekend hours and travel locally and occasionally regionally and nationally for conferences and meetings.
Desired Qualifications
  • Established contacts in the private and public sectors.
  • Previous career counseling experience.
  • Experience with 12Twenty, Salesforce, Affiniquest, or similar job and student information-system databases.
  • Experience actively developing and managing social-media tools and websites.

University of San Francisco appoints Brent Blaylock as athletic director

The University of San Francisco has appointed Brent Blaylock as its new Athletic Director, effective immediately. Blaylock most recently served as Executive Deputy Athletic Director and Chief Operating Officer at Oregon State University. Blaylock brings over 20 years of experience in collegiate and professional sports. At Oregon State, he led day-to-day operations and oversaw philanthropic and revenue generation initiatives whilst supervising several sports programmes including football and men's basketball. Previously, he held various positions at the University of Arizona from 2017 to 2024. Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, who served as interim athletic director since October 2025, will return to her role as deputy athletic director for administration and facilities. USF sponsors 14 NCAA Division I programmes competing in the West Coast Conference.
