Requirements
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of West Virginia or the applicable state where services will be performed.
- Board certification or recertification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
- Ability to see details at close range.
- Ability to maintain composure and deal calmly and effectively with high-stress situations.
- Ability to work in environments involving infectious diseases and toxic, harmful, or potentially hazardous compounds, solutions, medications, radiation, accidental needle sticks, sterilizing chemicals, anesthetics, and potential back injury when moving patients.
- Availability to be on call or work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Responsibilities
- Provide anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Administer anesthesia to render patients insensitive to pain during surgeries and procedures.
- Continuously observe patients and monitor their physical reactions to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents, informing the surgeon or anesthesiologist of adverse conditions that may threaten patient safety or care.
- Maintain patient safety at all times.
- Maintain excellence in airway management and use airway adjuncts, including Bullard laryngoscopes, fiberoptic scopes, and intubating laryngeal mask airways.
- Work within the scope of delineated clinical privileges.
- Take precautions to minimize infection risks for patients and healthcare professionals.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Participate in pre-anesthetic patient evaluations and select anesthetic agents and techniques.
- Perform anesthesia techniques including intravenous catheter insertion, invasive monitoring catheter insertion according to established protocols, endotracheal intubation and extubation, and arterial punctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
- Manage induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases.
- Recognize abnormal patient responses to anesthesia, adjunctive medications, or other therapies and initiate corrective measures.
- Determine the need for additional laboratory tests and provide resuscitative care as necessary.
- Evaluate and manage patients during the immediate postoperative period.
- Administer intravenous fluids according to the patient's medical history and surgical procedure.
- Administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit and consulting with the surgeon or anesthesiologist.
- Document patient status appropriately in the anesthesia record.
- Perform required safety and performance checks on anesthesia equipment and verify appropriate supplies before initiating care.
- Procure and assemble equipment and supplies when an anesthesia technician is unavailable.
- Review informed-consent documentation and identify the appropriate surgical site during Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation communication with circulating and holding-room registered nurses.
- Participate in the surgical pause in the operating room with the surgical team in accordance with departmental and regulatory compliance standards.
- Communicate appropriately with individuals involved in perioperative and postoperative patient care.
- Provide anesthesia care responsibly during life-threatening emergencies in the absence of an anesthesiologist.
- Assist with teaching and evaluating newly hired Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Graduate Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists in the clinical area.
- Maintain accountability for controlled substances according to department and hospital policies and state and federal guidelines.
