TikTok's 'Music on Stage' emerging artist discovery is back in 2026.

TikTok's 'Music on Stage' emerging artist discovery is back in 2026. TikTok's 'Music on Stage' emerging artist discovery is back in 2026 ashley king August 13, 2026. TikTok announces the return of Music on Stage, its global music program dedicated to discovering emerging artists and helping them grow their fanbases. Today, TikTok has announced the return of its global music program Music on Stage, hosted by Cat Burns and Songkarn. The program is dedicated to discovering emerging artists, helping them grow dedicated fan communities, and supporting them in their transition from livestream performances to real-world music careers. Returning in 2026 with a refreshed format, Music on Stage brings together talented music creators from over 20 regions across the globe, enabling them to perform live, connect with new audiences, and access new opportunities through TikTok Live and SoundOn, TikTok's music distribution and artist services platform. This year's program builds on a hugely successful inaugural campaign in 2025, which generated over 8.2 billion impressions and inspired over 230,000 posts using the hashtag #MusicOnStage. The program also resulted in original music being professionally produced and released for its global winners, demonstrating how TikTok Live can help transform emerging creators into artists with full music careers. Auditions begin on August 15, launching with a special All-Day Global Relay Concert that will see artists from around the world perform live in celebration of music without borders. Spanning three days, the relay will showcase original songwriting, live musicianship, and standout performances from some of TikTok Live's most exciting creators. The 2026 Global Finals in September will be hosted by British singer-songwriter Cat Burns for the EMEA and Americas competition, while Thai singer-songwriter Songkarn will host the APAC Finals. A second guest judge will be announced in the coming weeks. The top creators will gain access to professional development opportunities in partnership with SoundOn, like recording and releasing original music with full production, distribution, and promotional support. Winning artists will also have the chance to perform on major live stages, such as TikTok Live Fest and selected music festivals worldwide. These include opportunities to perform at the Breakaway Carolina Festival and the All Things Go NYC Festival in September. Last year's winners include Angelyque Solorio, who released her debut EP through SoundOn, generating more than 350,000 creator videos on TikTok, increasing her Spotify monthly listeners tenfold, and accumulating more than 450,000 streams. "Music on Stage reflects everything that makes TikTok Live unique," said Shen Gao, Head of Live Operations, Americas, at TikTok. "Every day we see talented artists build genuine communities, develop loyal fanbases, and share their music with audiences around the world in real time. This program takes that one step further by giving emerging artists the opportunity not only to be discovered, but to develop sustainable careers beyond the platform. We're proud to help the next generation of music talent move from livestreams to record releases and festival stages." "Music on Stage is TikTok Live's biggest global music competition and a chance for you to share your music with the world," added Cat Burns. "We all know that TikTok has played a massive part in my journey, and I am so grateful to the platform, so this year I will be joining Music on Stage as a guest judge, and I am so excited! Finals will be on the 18th of September, and the winner gets all the support in recording and releasing their own original song. So register now, go live, and I can't wait to see what you create." Creators can register for Music on Stage until August 14, with auditions opening on August 15. Fans can follow along throughout the competition by searching #MusicOnStage in the TikTok app and tuning into the Global Relay Concert and subsequent TikTok Live broadcasts.

TikTok Shop claims 2% of US online retail market, overtaking Target and Costco

TikTok Shop accounted for about 2% of online US retail spending in July, surpassing major retailers like Target, Costco, and The Home Depot, according to credit and debit card transaction data from Consumer Edge. This marks a significant increase from around 1.2% a year ago. The platform has been aggressively expanding its e-commerce capabilities since launching in 2023, recently introducing an Amazon Prime-style membership programme with free shipping and managed services for sellers. TikTok Shop pulled in over $500 million in US sales during last year's Black Friday Cyber Monday week and has onboarded major brands including Samsung, Disney, and Ralph Lauren. Power users making 20 or more purchases quarterly drove about 30% of overall spending whilst representing just 5% of buyers. Shoppers over 35 became the fastest-growing age demographic by year-over-year spending in Q2.

Meta and peers face legal challenges as social media addiction claims proceed in court.

Meta and peers face legal challenges as social media addiction claims proceed in court. August 12, 2026 OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / - More than 3,000 federal lawsuits alleging social media addiction are allowed to move forward after a U.S. appeals court decision. On Aug. 10, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed appeals from Meta Platforms and TikTok, which challenged lower court rulings that kept the cases active. The court stated their appeals were filed prematurely. The consolidated federal proceedings are under the jurisdiction of U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland. The case primarily revolves around Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. Meta and TikTok claimed that this law protected them from claims related to warnings about their platforms being addictive. The appeals court clarified that Section 230 offers a defense against liability, not complete immunity from lawsuits. This interpretation prevented the appeals from being heard at this stage. The decision upheld earlier rulings from the federal trial court without ruling on whether the companies are ultimately liable. The plaintiffs encompass individuals, families, school districts, municipalities, and states. They accuse Meta, Alphabet's Google, ByteDance's TikTok, and Snap of designing features that promote compulsive usage among minors. These lawsuits connect those alleged design features to issues like depression, anxiety, body image concerns, and other adverse effects. The companies deny these allegations. The plaintiffs are seeking damages, penalties, and restitution through the federal court process. Additionally, around 3,300 similar cases are consolidated in California state court, involving comparable accusations. Meta's separate trial continues in Oakland. The appeals court also rejected Meta's request to delay a distinct case brought by 29 state attorneys general. Jury selection is scheduled to commence on Aug. 12 in Oakland, with opening statements set for Aug. 18. The states accuse Meta of unlawfully collecting and exploiting children's data. They also claim Facebook and Instagram employed features that foster compulsive usage and that Meta misled consumers regarding platform safety. Meta has denied the allegations in this multistate lawsuit. This trial features claims based on the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act along with several state consumer protection laws. California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey also have claims under their respective laws scheduled for trial. A federal judge previously dismissed Meta's attempt to dismiss the case before trial, citing factual disputes requiring further judicial examination. Four states have submitted calculations seeking significant penalties if they succeed, though Meta contests those figures and their legal basis. These federal lawsuits follow multiple major legal actions related to youth safety and social media platform design. On Aug. 6, a judge in New Mexico ordered Meta to allocate $567 million to a youth mental health fund and associated programs, while also imposing safety restrictions on Facebook and Instagram for five years. This judgment followed a $375 million civil penalty issued by a New Mexico jury in March. Collectively, these rulings create a potential liability of $942 million for Meta in that case. A separate case in Los Angeles resulted in a jury ruling against Meta and Google in March. The jury found both companies negligent in designing Instagram and YouTube, awarding $6 million to a young woman who claimed she developed an addiction to these platforms as a child and suffered mental health issues. TikTok and Snap settled with the plaintiff before the trial under undisclosed terms. Meta and Google announced plans to appeal the California verdict. August 11, 2026 August 10, 2026

TikTok's AI Video Background effects hit desktop: creative impacts and privacy questions (August 2026).

TikTok's AI Video Background effects hit desktop: creative impacts and privacy questions (August 2026). TikTok AI Video Background effects debut on desktop: creative potential meets privacy concerns. TikTok has rolled out its highly anticipated AI-powered video background effects for desktop users as of August 2026, opening up new creative options for streamers, educators, and marketers. The launch brings the platform's suite of generative backgrounds - previously mobile-only - directly to desktop creators, intensifying competition with Instagram and Snap's recent feature launches. Early reactions highlight both a surge in experimentation and a fresh wave of privacy scrutiny. Why TikTok's desktop AI video backgrounds matter: context and lead-up. The arrival of TikTok AI video background desktop features marks a turning point in the mainstreaming of generative video tools. While mobile users have enjoyed dynamic filters and backgrounds since late 2025, desktop creators - especially those producing long-form content or live streams - were left using third-party plugins and workarounds. The new update, announced via TikTok's official newsroom on August 7, 2026, integrates AI-powered backgrounds directly into TikTok's desktop app and web interface. This move is less about feature parity and more about capturing the fast-growing audience of desktop-first creators: think gaming streamers, remote educators, and professional marketers. TikTok's internal data shows a 37% year-over-year increase in desktop video uploads between Q2 2025 and Q2 2026 - a segment the company is now betting on to drive both engagement and ad revenue. The update follows closely on the heels of Snap and Instagram's beta launches of AI video backgrounds for Gen Z video calls. But TikTok's desktop-first approach signals its intent to own not just casual creativity, but also the professional content pipeline. Analysis: creative upside - and the privacy trade-offs. The creative implications are immediate. Desktop TikTokers can now swap, animate, or stylize video backgrounds with a click - without leaving the app. Early adopters on X (formerly Twitter) have shown off everything from retro gaming-inspired sets to elaborate branded environments. Influencer and educator Dr. Maya Han tweeted, "Finally, I can teach history from a virtual Roman forum without a green screen. This is a game changer for remote learning." For marketers, the launch unlocks rapid prototyping of branded visuals and dynamic shoppable backgrounds. "We're already seeing brands test seasonal campaign sets that update in real-time," notes digital strategist Priya Patel. TikTok's own case study claims a 22% increase in viewer retention for videos using AI-generated environments versus static backgrounds, though independent validation is pending. But the creative freedom comes with new privacy concerns. TikTok's AI backgrounds rely on advanced segmentation models that process video streams in real time. While TikTok states that "all processing occurs locally on users' machines," privacy advocates aren't convinced. John Wu, a security researcher, warns: "Desktop apps often have broader system access than mobile. If TikTok's app collects more than video frames - like biometric markers or background activity data - users need transparency." This echoes issues raised in security analyses of AI video background plugins, where hidden data collection and model drift can introduce fresh risks. The new launch has already prompted a preliminary inquiry from the Irish Data Protection Commission, which oversees TikTok's EU operations. When compared to Snap and Instagram, TikTok's desktop integration is more ambitious, but also exposes more surface area for potential data misuse. Both rivals have limited AI background features to mobile and web environments - citing "user safety and device compatibility" as key reasons. TikTok, in contrast, is betting that the creative flexibility will outweigh any backlash, especially among pro creators. For those new to the space, the Definitive 2026 Guide to AI-Powered Video Background Plugins offers a comprehensive look at the broader plugin ecosystem, including privacy red flags and optimization strategies. Publicidade Community response and competitive dynamics. Initial community feedback is split. On TikTok itself, #AIDesktopBackgrounds racked up 12 million views in the first 48 hours, with creators sharing tutorials and mashups. "This is the upgrade I've been waiting for since 2024," commented @KotaStreams, a gaming influencer with 1.3 million followers. But skepticism is rising in tech circles. A popular thread on Reddit's r/ContentCreators warns: "TikTok's terms let them use your generated backgrounds for training. Are you OK with that if you're making branded content?" This concern is echoed in the official TikTok FAQ, which clarifies that "user-submitted backgrounds may be used to improve AI model accuracy" - a phrase that's already drawing regulatory attention. Industry analysts see TikTok's move as a direct response to Snap and Meta's push into generative media. According to a July 2026 Sensor Tower report, "70% of Gen Z social video creators say AI backgrounds are now a must-have feature," and TikTok is racing to cement its leadership among desktop users before the back-to-school season drives another surge. For educators, TikTok's integration could be a double-edged sword. Virtual classrooms can be made more engaging and accessible, but as one teacher pointed out, "The risk is that students' faces and home environments are being processed by algorithms we don't fully understand." Marketers, meanwhile, are testing integrations with e-commerce overlays and real-time analytics. Several brands are piloting interactive product placement via AI-generated backgrounds, following step-by-step strategies outlined in recent brand storytelling tutorials. What to watch next: rollout milestones and regulatory flashpoints. TikTok's desktop AI video background rollout will proceed in phases. The feature is live globally as of August 7, 2026, for users with the latest desktop app (Windows 11+ and macOS 14+), with web-based support arriving by September. API access for third-party tools and partnerships with streaming platforms like OBS Studio are expected before year-end, a move that could further disrupt the pro streaming market (see: integrating with OBS workflows). Regulatory scrutiny is rising in both the EU and the US. The Irish Data Protection Commission has requested a full audit of TikTok's desktop data processing, with findings due in Q4. Meanwhile, US Senators have renewed calls for a "federal transparency mandate" on generative AI video tools, citing concerns about undisclosed biometric data collection. For creators, the next few months will be a test: Will the creative upside justify new privacy risks? Marketers and educators are watching for breakthrough case studies - and for any regulatory curveballs that could change the rules overnight. Bottom line: TikTok's AI video background desktop launch is a high-stakes bet on creator empowerment and platform stickiness. But as the feature race heats up, the real contest may be for users' trust - and control over the data behind the magic.
