Requirements
  • At least one year of specialized litigation experience is required.
  • Specialized experience includes reviewing legal documents such as complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels for completeness of information; retrieving and assembling information for hearing or trial use; researching legal sources to obtain or verify information; maintaining file systems; and using automated software to produce legal-related reports, documents, correspondence, and related materials.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Hands-on familiarity with computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat is required.
  • The ability to consistently deliver high-quality work under extreme pressure is required.
  • The ability to obtain a Public Trust security clearance is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct legal support to attorneys, investigators, and paralegals, including reviewing incoming materials and preparing legal documents such as charging instruments, motions, orders, pleadings, deposition notices, trial subpoenas, and grand jury subpoenas.
  • Proofread and edit legal documents, including motions, orders, correspondence, discovery requests and responses, and other pleadings, and prepare recurring legal documents in accordance with governing style and formatting rules.
  • Electronically file documents with appropriate state or federal courts at the direction of attorneys, applying knowledge of local court rules and practices.
  • Assist with trial preparation by compiling trial notebooks and witness and exhibit lists.
  • Prepare and track grand jury subpoenas and returns; process and organize legal data and support materials; organize and copy documents; and assemble record materials for court filings.
  • Compose original letters concerning legal procedures and case developments, including transmittal of pleadings, requests for extensions of time, and notices to attorneys representing defendants.
  • Perform docketing duties by opening, updating, and closing cases in the automated case-tracking system and searching the database for required information.
  • Obligate funds for litigation expenses and monitor their continued necessity.
  • Review bills and invoices and submit them to the budget office for payment.
  • Maintain calendars for active cases and attorneys; track filing, hearing, trial, conference, interview, appointment, and court-appearance dates; maintain a suspense system; and notify attorneys of pending deadlines and commitments.
  • Assemble physical and electronic files for new cases, including chronological filing, preparation and printing of conflict-of-interest sheets, numbering case materials and discovery, and sending additional discovery to outside parties as directed.
  • Prepare files for closing by organizing documents chronologically, verifying that relevant documents are present, and preparing closing sheets for attorney signature.
  • Receive visitors, answer telephones, refer callers or take messages, deliver and retrieve papers from the federal courthouse, provide information about matters and office procedures, and determine which matters require referral to an Assistant United States Attorney and their urgency.
  • Attend required or appropriate meetings and training.
  • Produce written documents and materials using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Access, Adobe Acrobat Professional, and other databases, including integrating tables, charts, and graphs into legal documents or courtroom presentations.
  • Provide automated litigation assistance for trial preparation and courtroom presentations, including transcribing dictation, using scanners and plotters, preparing trial documents and visual materials, enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
