Requirements
  • At least one of the following: three years of security experience within the past five years; three years of military or National Guard service, active duty or reserve; an Associate’s degree or higher in a security-related or law-enforcement-related field; successful completion of a police officer’s basic training academy; or special approval for equivalent education or experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memoranda in English.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts accurately using basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Some posts may require knowledge of Internet programs, word-processing software, or other required software.
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification where required.
  • Current and valid state driver’s license.
  • State Security Officer License where applicable.
  • Certification in the use of weapons where applicable.
  • State Armed License where required.
  • Vehicle operators must be at least 25 years old and have a driving record with no more than one moving violation.
  • Ability to pass a drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Ability to successfully pass an approved physical evaluation before assignment and maintain the physical capability to protect self and others, use firearms and other equipment, function in applicable environments and climates, and withstand sudden emotional stress and physical exertion.
  • Ability to run, jump, climb, or crawl as required.
  • Ability to pass an annual physical abilities assessment verifying the ability to perform required physical functions, including frequent walking, standing, lifting, climbing, responding to emergencies, and operating security equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Respond immediately to active-shooter incidents by moving toward shots fired to neutralize the threat.
  • Follow all assigned general and specific post orders.
  • Apply graduated use-of-force rules and use only the force necessary to subdue or detain individuals.
  • Patrol buildings and grounds at industrial plants, commercial establishments, docks, logging camp areas, or work sites.
  • Patrol lobbies, corridors, and public rooms; confer with management; interview guests and employees; and interrogate persons to detect violations and investigate disturbances, complaints, thefts, vandalism, and accidents.
  • Patrol public areas to detect fires, unsafe conditions, and missing or inoperative safety equipment.
  • Examine doors, windows, and gates to verify that they are secure.
  • Set and operate thermostatic controls to maintain specified temperatures in buildings or cold-storage rooms.
  • Inspect equipment and machinery for evidence of tampering.
  • Register at watch stations to record the times of inspection trips.
  • Inspect assigned areas and record property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning machinery or equipment for supervisory staff.
  • Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and unlocked security doors.
  • Warn violators about rule infractions and apprehend or expel persons engaged in suspicious or criminal acts.
  • Notify staff about persons with questionable reputations.
  • Permit authorized persons to enter and regulate vehicle and pedestrian traffic at plant entrances.
  • Drive a radio-equipped vehicle through the client’s establishment, check alarms, and locate alarm sources.
  • Sound alarms or contact police or fire departments by telephone in cases of fire or unauthorized persons.
  • Assist management and law-enforcement officers during emergencies.
  • Contact supervisors by radio or telephone to report irregularities and obtain further instructions.
  • Write investigation and automobile-usage reports.
  • Undergo annual physical abilities assessments, with documentation, identification of limitations, and corrective action, medical evaluation, remediation, or reassignment when required.
