"Carrefour to pay 155 million euros for Colruyt Group's French neighborhood store division"

"Carrefour to pay 155 million euros for Colruyt Group's French neighborhood store division" Food 29 September, 2026 According to the French business publication La Lettre, Carrefour is on the verge of acquiring Codifrance, the Colruyt Group subsidiary that supplies neighborhood stores such as Coccinelle and Coccimarket. 3,000 neighborhood stores. Carrefour is reportedly willing to pay 155 million euros for Codifrance, Colruyt Group's French wholesale division, which serves a network of approximately 3,000 smaller neighborhood stores, about 700 of which operate under brands such as Coccinelle, Coccimarket, Panier Sympa, VivÉco, and Épi Service. The retailer would take over the 500 employees and two logistics facilities. The news comes from the typically well-informed website La Lettre. Codifrance, the Colruyt Group's only remaining operation in France following the sale of its French supermarkets, has annual revenue of 310 million euros. According to La Lettre, Carrefour aims to strengthen its position in the neighborhood grocery segment with this acquisition. Intermarché is also said to have shown interest in the wholesaler, but Carrefour is offering more. Furthermore, with this acquisition, Carrefour can prevent its own franchisees from sourcing goods more cheaply from Codifrance outside the group - a practice that is apparently common. Official confirmation of the deal is still pending.

In recent weeks, supermarket chains such as Carrefour, E.Leclerc, U, and Intermarché have been at the center of a troubling Alerte Listeria chez, raising alarms among consumers and health authorities alike. The presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause severe illness, has led to the recall of various food products, leaving shoppers wondering how such widespread contamination could occur. As families stock their pantries and prepare meals, the specter of foodborne illness looms larger than ever. The scope of the issue. The Listeria scare has affected numerous products across prominent retailers, stirring unease among consumers who rely on these stores for their daily groceries. Reports of contaminated items range from deli meats to pre-packaged salads, with some products being pulled from the shelves after routine inspections revealed the presence of harmful bacteria. The question arises: how did armso fold arrive at this point of widespread concern? The role of Food Safety regulations. Food safety regulations are designed to protect consumers from hazardous contaminants. In Europe, regulations enforced by agencies such as the European Food Safety Authority outline strict guidelines for the handling and processing of food products. However, lapses in compliance can lead to serious repercussions, as seen in the recent recalls. An investigation into these incidents highlights the vulnerability of its food supply chain, where lapses in hygiene or processing may allow bacteria like Listeria to thrive. Understanding Listeria contamination. Listeria can be particularly insidious because it grows in refrigerated conditions, unlike many other pathogens that are killed by cooking. This allows it to remain a persistent threat in products like soft cheeses, deli meats, and ready-to-eat salads. The symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by Listeria, can be severe, especially for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The potential for serious health risks underscores the importance of vigilant food safety practices. Recent alerts and recalls. Recently, a number of products were flagged in the Alerte Listeria chez from major retailers. For instance, Carrefour issued a recall for a specific batch of meat products due to contamination concerns, impacting customers in various regions. Similarly, E.Leclerc and Intermarché have also faced scrutiny, with their own recalls related to pre-packaged meals and salads. Such wide-ranging alerts suggest systemic issues that need to be addressed. Consumer reactions. The public's response to these alerts has been one of concern and confusion. Many consumers are left questioning the safety of the foods they buy. Some have taken to social media to express their unease, sharing stories of finding recalled items in their homes. This has led to a wave of inquiries directed at retailers, seeking clarity on the effectiveness of their food safety protocols. The ongoing situation serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of trust in the food industry. Preventative measures and recommendations. In light of the recent recalls, consumers are advised to remain vigilant. Checking product labels for recall notices is a crucial step in ensuring food safety at home. Additionally, proper food handling practices - including thorough cooking, proper refrigeration, and hygiene - can mitigate the risk of contamination. For those wanting to stay informed, resources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide valuable guidance on food safety. Industry responsibility. The onus is not solely on consumers. Retailers and food manufacturers must reinforce their commitment to food safety. Regular audits, employee training on hygiene protocols, and transparent communication with customers are essential strategies to regain consumer confidence. Major players in the industry can also collaborate with health authorities to improve safety standards, ensuring that incidents like these are minimized in the future. The global context. This situation is not confined to France. Globally, incidents of foodborne illness are rising, prompting health organizations to call for action. In 2021, the World Health Organization reported that foodborne illnesses affect nearly one in ten people worldwide each year. This data highlights the importance of robust food safety systems, not just locally but on a global scale. The interconnected nature of the food supply chain means that vigilance must extend beyond national borders. Lessons learned. As armso fold navigate through this Listeria alert, there are important lessons to be learned. The need for stringent food safety practices cannot be overstated. Both consumers and producers share the responsibility of ensuring that food is safe to eat. For more insights on similar issues, consider reading about Alerte rappel chez Intermarché et Netto dans ces départements, ces quiches sont contaminées par Listeria, which highlights additional contamination concerns in different product categories. Looking ahead. The Alerte Listeria chez at major supermarket chains serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing challenges in maintaining food safety. As consumers, armso fold must remain proactive about the products armso fold bring into its homes, while also advocating for stronger regulations and accountability in the food industry. The path forward requires collaboration among retailers, health authorities, and consumers to ensure that the food supply is safe and reliable. As the situation develops, staying informed will be key. Regularly checking for updates from retailers and health organizations can help consumers make safer choices. Furthermore, governments and food safety agencies must prioritize transparency and public health to mitigate future risks associated with foodborne illnesses. The recent alerts around Listeria contamination remind armso fold that food safety is a shared responsibility that requires diligence and proactive measures from all parties involved. Carrefour eyes India expansion via organic route, acquisitions.

Carrefour eyes India expansion via organic route, acquisitions. PTI Last Updated: Sep 03, 2026, 07:37:00 PM IST French retailer Carrefour has re-entered India through a partnership with Apparel Group. The company plans to open multiple stores across Delhi-NCR in the coming months. They will also expand into the western region by next summer. Carrefour is open to acquisitions to accelerate its growth strategy. The focus remains on profitable expansion and building a strong supply chain. Greater Noida: French retail major Carrefour, which has re-entered the Indian market after a decade through a partnership with Dubai-based Apparel Group, has plans to add multiple stores in the coming months across Delhi-NCR, enter the western region by next summer, and is also open to acquisitions to expedite growth. The Apparel Group, which opened its over 50,000-sq ft Carrefour store in Greater Noida, Delhi-NCR, will add another store in the next four weeks, as part of its plan to roll out 50 food and grocery stores in the first phase of expansion over the next five years. You May Like This is Carrefour's second inning in India, after it entered in 2010 through the wholesale cash-and-carry business and exited in 2014 by closing its five stores, citing poor performance and inability to find a local partner for expansion. When asked about the expansion strategy, Apparel Group owner and chairman Nilesh Ved told PTI that it will take a calibrated, controlled speed and not a mass rollout. It will also be open to an acquisition route to accelerate growth alongside organic expansion. "We want to grow fast, but at the same time we want to make sure we are in control. You need a strategy - can we open five, ten, fifteen stores at one time, and then move forward. So we are opening one, we are opening a second one very soon, and looking at another in NCR. By next summer we will be ready for the western region," he said. Carrefour, in India, as per its plan, will initially focus on the hypermarket format carrying around 50,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs), before rolling out other formats such as Carrefour Express, Carrefour Premium and Carrefour Gourmet in markets like Mumbai and Delhi, Ved said. "We are also looking at M&As - if there is an opportunity for us to acquire, we are looking at that, to see if we can grow with acquisition also," he added. On e-commerce and quick-commerce, Ved said the company will first focus on its physical stores rather than build dark stores in the initial phase, while it works out its supply chain. Ved said Carrefour will move into e-commerce and quick commerce once its supply chain is ready, drawing on the pattern seen in Europe, the Gulf and India, where growth in brick-and-mortar retail and online retail are happening simultaneously. "We will try to use our stores to do that, instead of doing dark stores in the early stages. Then we will change the strategy according to what India needs," he said, adding that India, given its scale and diversity, cannot be treated as a single market and is comparable in size to Europe. As per its growth strategy, the company will prioritise "profitable growth" over an investment-led, cash-burn model, Ved said, adding that Apparel Group, as a privately held group, remains focused on generating profit as it scales. "As a parent group, we are very careful about how much profit we make and how we grow from it. We will grow smartly, and the smart way for us to do it is to see how much profit we generate. It's important to think in that format. One of the values for us is that we have the engine of Carrefour, but do we have the profit for it to grow and multiply? We will do the investments, and we want to be profitable," he said. On being asked as a late entrant in the Indian retail sector, which is projected to touch Rs 190 lakh crore (approx. USD 1.6-1.8 trillion) by 2030, Ved said India is among those markets where new shopping malls are coming. "So, it gives opportunities for people like Carrefour and Apparel Group to go and take more market share in that shop. India is growing. So, the market will grow on its own. We will grow with India," he said. About sourcing, Ved said the recent Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by India with the UK, UAE and some other countries, along with the prospect of a similar trade pact between India and the European Union could pave the way for two-way product flows and provide an additional boost with French Carrefour merchandise entering India, and Indian products being sold across Carrefour's global network. "I think both ways. Indian products will go... our aim is also to see how we can ship the main India product outside to Carrefour, which has 15,000 stores globally in 40 countries - and see how we can get French products also here. It is just the beginning. I think the journey is going to be amazing," he added. Patrick Lasfargues, Executive Director - International Partnerships, Carrefour Group, said the company is entering India this time with a business-to-consumer (B2C) hypermarket model, a departure from its earlier five-year stint about 12 years ago, which was based on a cash-and-carry, B2B format backed by direct investment. On store format, Lasfargues said Carrefour has adopted a "hypermarket compact" format for India, in the range of 35,000 to 50,000 square feet, smaller than its legacy hypermarkets in France that have historically run much larger. The company is also considering smaller supermarket-format stores of about 10,000 square feet focused on convenience, in addition to slightly larger hypermarkets than the Noida store, going forward, he said. Based in Dubai, UAE, Apparel Group is a global fashion and lifestyle retail conglomerate which operates over 2,600 retail stores and 85 brands on all platforms. It has a strong presence in the Gulf region and has expanded to market in India, South Africa, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Egypt.
