Sysco named recipient of Charleston RiverDogs' T. Ashton Phillips Award.

Sysco named recipient of Charleston RiverDogs' T. Ashton Phillips Award. September 1, 2026 7:05 PM The Charleston RiverDogs honored longtime partner Sysco as the recipient of the T. Ashton Phillips Award before Tuesday's game at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, recognizing the major steps Sysco and the RiverDogs took together this year to make a positive impact on the community. Named in honor of longtime RiverDogs owner T. Ashton Phillips, father of current RiverDogs partner Al Phillips, the award recognizes a community partner that has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to service and helped the RiverDogs extend its impact beyond the ballpark. This year, that commitment is reflected through Sysco's brand new Behind the Plate partnership with the RiverDogs, which spotlights and supports the Charleston hospitality industry. "Sysco has been such a tremendous partner to the RiverDogs and to the Charleston community, and the T. Ashton Phillips Award is a fitting way to recognize the impact they have made," said Dave Echols, RiverDogs President and General Manager. "From supporting the people who make Charleston's hospitality industry so special to helping put food on the tables of local families, Sysco has consistently demonstrated what it means to be a great community partner." The Behind the Plate initiative, launched by the RiverDogs and Sysco this season, was created to celebrate and support the people who power Charleston's food, beverage and hospitality industries. The program includes the Behind the Plate Club, industry-focused events at the ballpark, Chef Spotlights and opportunities for hospitality employees to gather and enjoy a night at the ballpark together. The partnership also extends into the community through Sysco's sponsorship of the RiverDogs catcher. For every hit recorded by a RiverDogs catcher, who plays behind the plate, during every home game, Sysco pledged to donate 10 meals to the Lowcountry Food Bank, helping provide food to local families in need. Throughout the season, RiverDogs catchers recorded 67 hits, resulting in a donation representing 670 meals to the Lowcountry Food Bank. Sysco presented the cumulative donation during Tuesday's game. The donation is one of several ways Sysco and the RiverDogs have worked together to make an impact in the community. Through the partnership, Sysco has also supported Camp Happy Days, which provides programs and services to children with cancer and their families, including helping serve lunch to campers. Sysco and the RiverDogs have also joined forces through the RiverDogs Food Truck to help feed members of the community at local events. Beyond its charitable efforts, the Behind the Plate initiative has created opportunities for members of Charleston's food and beverage industry to connect and build camaraderie with one another, recognizing the people who work behind the scenes and behind the plate to make the city's hospitality industry thrive. For the RiverDogs, the award represents more than a recognition of a successful partnership. It celebrates a shared belief that the ballpark can be a place where the community comes together - not only to enjoy a game, but also to support one another. Brakes name to disappear as Ashford-based food wholesaler rebranded.

Brakes name to disappear as Ashford-based food wholesaler rebranded. Published: 14:20, 25 August 2026 Updated: 14:48, 25 August 2026 * | * | * | * | One of the county's best-known brand names is set to disappear into the history books, KentOnline can confirm. Passers-by this week were shocked when the branding for food wholesaler Brakes - for many years known as Brake Brothers - was replaced outside its Ashford headquarters on Eureka Business Park, Kennington. In its place is a sign proclaiming only its parent company, Sysco. The US multinational took over the firm in 2016 for a deal believed to have been about £2.1 billion. In a statement, a Sysco spokesman said the company has "transformed the business" since taking it over. "Sysco has invested in facilities, people and products to build one of the country's most successful foodservice wholesalers, powering local businesses, schools and hospitals to serve fantastic, fresh food," they said. "As Brakes has evolved, we believe the time is right to take the Sysco name. "This is something the Brakes' family, whose relatives founded the business, fully support. "Over the next year, we will complete a phased transition to Sysco, celebrating the impact that Brakes continues to have in Kent and across the UK." Brake Brothers, formed in 1958 in Lenham by siblings William, Frank and Peter Brake, started life supplying poultry to local restaurants. Over the years, it shifted its focus onto frozen foods and then further expanded its scope, becoming one of the UK's biggest food and drink suppliers. It listed on the stock exchange in 1986, with each Brake brother retaining a 25% stake. Its headquarters have been in Ashford for at least 50 years. With money generated by the flotation, it went through a period of rapid growth through acquisition. In 2002, the founding Brake brothers decided to sell up and US investment firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice took the company private again after a £612m deal. At around this time, the company changed its name to the Brake Group. Five years later, the firm was sold to another investment group, Bain Capital, in a deal worth £1.2 billion. Before Sysco snapped it in 2016. In recent years, it has been known as Brakes, a Sysco Company. Sysco has been sponsor of Ashford's Pride festival for the last three years. More Stories

Hickory Tavern trims footprint amid brand revitalization.

Hickory Tavern trims footprint amid brand revitalization. Aug 24 2026 The company said the proximity of affected restaurants to other locations was a significant factor in the decision. Hickory Tavern closed four restaurants as parent company Artistry Restaurants concentrates resources on locations it believes have stronger long-term prospects. The closures include Hickory Tavern restaurants in Mooresville, Huntersville, and Providence Road in North Carolina, along with Columbia-Vista in South Carolina. Artistry said proximity to other Hickory Tavern restaurants played a role in the decision, allowing the company to direct investment, team resources, and operational support toward the remaining system. The chain now has 16 restaurants across the Carolinas. "While never an easy decision, it is important that we regularly evaluate where we can operate more efficiently so our resources and future investments are directed toward the priorities that will best serve our teams and guests," Artistry Restaurants CEO Bryan Lockwood said in a statement. "These changes, along with other efficiencies, will support Hickory Tavern's long-term plan and strength as a brand." Customers of the shuttered restaurants will have alternatives within the existing footprint. Artistry pointed to nearby Hickory Tavern locations in Harris, Ballantyne, Sun Valley, North Carolina and Columbia-Woodhill, South Carolina. The move comes roughly 19 months after Artistry acquired Hickory Tavern in January 2025 and began putting resources behind the longtime Carolina concept. Since the acquisition, Artistry has rolled out a menu refresh, restaurant redesigns, a new brand book of standards and practices, and partnerships with companies including Sysco. The company said those initiatives were part of an effort to strengthen Hickory Tavern's position in its communities and improve the guest experience. Those investments have been unfolding under brand president Tony Read, an industry veteran who spent three decades with Outback Steakhouse before joining Hickory Tavern. Read told FSR magazine earlier this year that he viewed the chain's established place in North and South Carolina as one of its biggest strengths. "We are a neighborhood gathering spot," Read said. "It was definitely the feeling that I got when I came in here." "Even though we're slated as a sports bar, I think we're bigger than that and the community feels that. That's why we've always pitched ourselves as this neighborhood gathering spot," he added. Hickory Tavern has spent nearly three decades operating as a sports bar, family restaurant, and community gathering place across the Carolinas. Artistry's acquisition brought the concept into a portfolio that also includes Oak & Stone, Shrimp Basket, Boca, Atlantic Beer & Oyster, Sandbar Amelia Island, and The Chapman. Read's early work with Hickory Tavern focused in part on its people and restaurant culture. He said his belief that the guest experience cannot surpass the employee experience influenced how he began his tenure with the company. "I'm a firm believer that the guest experience will never exceed the team member's experience," Read previously told FSR magazine. "You ever go to a drive-thru, and you get to the window - how long does it take you to recognize if that person wants to be there or not? Immediately. And what I tell my team is how foolish of us to think that our customers don't have that same ability." That focus will now extend to employees affected by the four closures. Artistry said it plans to work with those workers to identify potential transfers to other Hickory Tavern restaurants.
