Job Description Summary

5W Burn Trauma Stepdown Unit is a 25 Bed Stepdown Unit at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. 5W is a unique unit at MUSC and within the state as the only Burn Stepdown unit. All nurses are trained in complex burn dressing changes and are supported by members of the Burn Team and Free-Floating Charge Nurse. Robust unit leadership supports onboarding of new graduate nurses and monitor quality metrics. Our nurses work collaboratively with the Burn Physician Team, Trauma Physician Team Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Case Managers, and Social Workers to customize care for patients. 5W offers opportunities for nurses to obtain Med-Surg, Burn, and Trauma certifications.

Job Description

Hours Per Week: 36 

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift:  3-12 hour shifts. Shifts vary based on the needs of the department.  

Job Summary/Purpose: Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) assists at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process; interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes. 

Minimum Training and Education:  Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. 

Required Licensure, Certifications, and Registrations:  Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
