Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician program, or one year of experience, is required.
  • One year of experience working in an ambulatory clinic performing or assisting with provider-ordered procedures unique to each clinic is required.
  • Current healthcare provider Basic Life Support certification, or certification within 90 days of hire, is required.
  • Effective communication skills are required when working with customers from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Good telephone, interpersonal communication, grammar, spelling, organization, multitasking, independent-work, conflict-resolution, customer-service, and problem-solving abilities are required.
  • Knowledge of insurance coverage pertaining to copayments and referrals is required.
  • Ability to follow computerized scheduling template protocols is required.
  • Basic computer skills, including word processing, Windows applications, and online scheduling, are required; database skills are preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations and use protective equipment and appropriate safety precautions is required.
Responsibilities
  • Schedule patient appointments using the electronic medical record system and provider guidelines.
  • Check in patients by gathering and entering patient information, handling insurance information, and collecting copayments.
  • Check out patients and address additional patient concerns or needs.
  • Obtain prior medical records and studies when appropriate.
  • Document vital signs, weights, and other data in patient charts and communicate information to team members.
  • Respond to correspondence by telephone or in writing as appropriate.
  • Maintain an organized work area.
  • Send chart notes to primary care physicians as needed.
  • Assist patients to exam rooms.
  • Contact patients with laboratory and x-ray results and document phone calls.
  • Obtain specimens, perform laboratory work, and document data in patient records.
  • Perform injections, venipuncture, and electrocardiograms.
  • Keep exam rooms orderly and clean between patients.
  • Prepare exam rooms and minor-surgery areas for procedures.
  • Assist physicians with sterile procedures, wound management, and in-office procedures.
  • Perform sterile processing of instruments as needed.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures accurately and efficiently.
  • Communicate information to patients according to protocols and provide patient education as appropriate.
  • Promote accident prevention, report potential hazards, and maintain a safe environment.
  • Respond to emergency situations and contact emergency services as needed.
  • Review and update patient medications.
  • Perform or assist with clinic-specific procedures as directed by providers.
  • Initiate delegated protocols as appropriate.
  • Perform limited x-rays; certification is required.
  • Train and mentor Clinical Assistants.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Communicate supply needs to the ordering person in a timely manner.
  • Read insurance updates.
