Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field, or a relevant combination of education and experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Three years of experience in a workers' compensation claims environment, including reviewing, investigating, and closing workers' compensation claims; alternatively, one year of AF Group Claims Representative I experience handling difficult or complex claims.
  • Proficiency using computers and company-standard software specific to the position.
  • Knowledge of medical and legal terminology related to the work.
  • Knowledge of workers' compensation laws and regulations, including jurisdictional laws.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective customer service skills.
  • Ability to negotiate, build consensus, and resolve conflict.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and analytical skills.

Responsibilities
  • Verify workers' compensation coverage for employers and injured employees.
  • Determine claim compensability through thorough investigation.
  • Determine the causal relationship between the reported injury and incident to ensure appropriate payment of benefits.
  • Facilitate return to work for injured employees.
  • Establish timely and appropriate claim reserves within authority based on anticipated financial exposure.
  • Document claim specifics with potential for subrogation recovery, including the amount of potential recovery.
  • Manage medical bills for non-indemnity and indemnity claims directly associated with the claimed injury and approve payment based on the treatment plan and medical support.
  • Conclude and close files after claim resolution while meeting internal performance standards, complying with state legislation, avoiding penalties, and managing expenses.
  • Negotiate settlements with attorneys or injured parties within authority to bring cases to final disposition.
  • Work with the manager on complex files or files exceeding settlement or reserve authority.
  • Manage outside vendors to support cost-containment efforts.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Keep current with workers' compensation statutes, case law, and rehabilitation developments to accurately interpret and apply relevant laws.
  • Administer complex claims and catastrophic exposures within authority, including claims from dedicated large accounts.
  • Exercise independent judgment to settle cases before mediation or litigation.
  • Participate in agent and client relationship management.
  • Assist in mentoring team members.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.
  • Experience handling workers' compensation claims in multiple jurisdictions is preferred.
  • Bilingual skills are preferred.
