Thyme Care and Texas Oncology reduce cost of care for a leading cancer drug through weight-based dosing. Oct 15, 2026, 09:00 ET Joint initiative demonstrates how risk-based, value-based partnerships can convert a well-established clinical practice into meaningful, scaled savings across a shared patient population NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Thyme Care, the nationally recognized oncology company, and Texas Oncology, the nation's leading cancer care organization, today announced new data showing that weight-based dosing of pembrolizumab, delivered under a value-based care agreement, meaningfully reduced cost of care for their shared Medicare Advantage population. Findings will be presented as a poster at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Quality Care Symposium, October 16th through 17th, 2026, under the Cost, Value, and Policy track. Pembrolizumab, sold as Keytruda, accounts for a meaningful percentage of total cancer care spending in the United States. An incredibly effective drug, it is used to treat dozens of cancer types across both curative and non-curative treatment settings, extending life and improving quality of life. It is typically given at a fixed dose, though extensive evidence shows it can be dosed by patient weight instead, with no impact on efficacy. In fee-for-service oncology, the payment structure often disincentivizes decisions that can reduce drug spend in a clinically appropriate way. As a result, weight-based dosing has, to date, generally been adopted only within CMMI-sponsored value-based care arrangements like the Enhancing Oncology Model. This collaboration shows the same model working outside CMMI programs. Under Thyme Care's risk-based agreements with health plans, payment is tied to outcomes and total cost of care, so the plan and the practice are working toward the same patient-centric goal. That alignment lets Texas Oncology act on the evidence without taking on financial risk to do so, and makes weight-based dosing possible at scale across this population. "Texas Oncology has long been a leader in bringing innovative, evidence-based care to our patients. Thyme Care made the economics work for our practice, enabling our clinical pharmacy team to scale this work across our broader patient population," said Debra Patt, MD, PhD, MBA, FASCO, Executive Vice President, Policy and Strategic Initiatives, Texas Oncology. "This is what true value-based care looks like, and we're proud of what this partnership has accomplished.". Texas Oncology had already explored weight-based dosing within the Enhancing Oncology Model and the approach garnered success. Under Thyme Care's risk-based contracts, extending that approach across a broader, shared population required new workflows and bidirectional data sharing. Thyme Care created a technology-enabled pembrolizumab weight-based dosing program that identified eligible patients earlier using payer claims and prior authorization data, enabled two-way data exchange to identify stalled conversion opportunities, tracked results across multiple payer contracts, and routed every eligible patient through clinical pharmacist review, in partnership with the treating oncologist, before conversion. The analysis, conducted between September 2025 and April 2026, shows that across 613 pembrolizumab administrations, 55% were eligible for weight-based dosing based on patient weight, and 34% of those were successfully converted. By the final two months of that window, adherence consistently exceeded 45%. In total, the intervention reduced pembrolizumab utilization and lowered cost of care by more than $723,000, a 7.3% reduction against projected costs under standard dosing. "For decades we've talked about the cost of cancer drugs, and quite honestly few of the proposed solutions have been operationalized at a meaningful scale. Weight-based dosing is a good example. The evidence has been there, but it rarely happened outside of CMS models because the incentive model to do it didn't exist," Bobby Green, MD, co-founder, president, and chief medical officer at Thyme Care. "Our team at Thyme Care built it, and I'm grateful to them and to the Texas Oncology physicians and pharmacists who worked through it with us. We acted on the evidence and saw real savings. This is the kind of work we need to bring to the rising cost of treating cancer." The partnership continued to deliver results well beyond the original analysis window, reaching nearly 60% by June 2026. As the oncology treatment landscape continues to evolve, most recently with the introduction of a subcutaneous formulation of pembrolizumab, Thyme Care and Texas Oncology are using that same approach to identify the next set of high value interventions that could meaningfully reduce drug spend. Thyme Care raises $125 million, pushing cancer care startup's valuation above $2 billion. Sep 4, 2026 - 03:17 L to R: Thyme Care Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer Bobby Green,; Thyme Companies Executive Chairman Robin Shah; Thyme Care CEO Brad Diephuis Courtesy: Thyme Care Despite recent advancements in oncology, the branch of medicine focused on the study, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, it remains one of the most expensive, arduous and overwhelming diagnoses to navigate. Thyme Care, launched in 2020 and ranked No. 18 on the 2026 CNBC Disruptor 50 list, has focused on improving the fragmentation and disconnections in cancer care through its virtual navigation platform for patients. To extend its efforts, Thyme Care has raised $125 million from investors in a Series E funding round at a valuation of more than $2 billion, it announced on Wednesday. The deal, led by Morgan Health with participation from strategic healthcare investors Humana and CVS Health Ventures, roughly doubled its valuation from a Series D less than a year ago. Other investors include AlleyCorp, HealthQuest Capital, and a16z Bio + Health. Thyme Care is now forming a new parent company focused on building additional businesses that will address some of those disconnections in how cancer care is delivered, accessed and paid for. Robin Shah, who co-founded Thyme Care alongside Bobby Green, will serve as the executive chairman of the new parent entity, which will be called Thyme Companies. Shah said that the timing was right to take this next step in the journey to improve the cancer care system. "When Bobby and I started this business six years ago, we had this vision that we needed to go after all the white spaces that were being constantly overlooked in oncology," said Shah, adding that Thyme Care aimed to address "the care in between," or the things and questions that come up between appointments and visits. Thyme Care has grown into that role. The company's services are available to more than 10.5 million people across all 50 U.S. states, and it manages more than $7 billion in oncology spend. Revenue surpassed $125 million last year, five times more than the previous year. More coverage of the 2026 CNBC Disruptor 50. Shah stepped down as CEO of Thyme Care in July, appointing Brad Diephuis, who previously served as the company's president and chief operating officer, as his replacement. Shah said that Diephuis had been a significant driver of Thyme Care's business, and this move now allows him to focus on Thyme Companies, "the platform for us to build out other initiatives or full companies that are focused on these [oncology] problems," he said. One of the first focuses under the new corporate structure will be addressing cancer drug affordability, Shah said, with a goal of accelerating the adoption of lower-cost biosimilars, which are clinically equivalent drugs akin to generic drugs. To date, cancer-focused biosimilars have not delivered as much cost savings to patients as promised, according to Shah, and Thyme Companies will work with health plans and providers to find meaningful savings. The other initial focus for Thyme Companies will be around improving access and navigation within the clinical trial space, where Shah said enrollment challenges are limiting patient access to beneficial trials and slowing drug development. The first of these businesses is expected to launch later this year. Shah said that Thyme Care is now profitable, generating positive free cash flow, and "has a large balance sheet to make investments that we wouldn't have been able to three years ago." He said acquisitions of other businesses that could help solve some of these oncology challenges, as well as recruitment of additional talent, are also on the table. Shah said the company does not have any "near-term viewpoint" on an IPO, but said it will continue to evaluate public and private investment opportunities that "will allow us to move faster, because we think this is a problem that impacts everyone in the country, let alone the world." "We have a team that is focused on being together for the long term to solve problems in healthcare with a hyperfocus on oncology," Shah said.
